The Kistane were raided for slaves by the gala. Emperor Menelik II of Shewa eventually incorporated the kistane territories into his empire, which ended Oromo raids by bringing the area under his direct control. Menelik II's grandfather, Negus Sahle Selassie, had also provided some protection to the Kistane from Oromo raids.
Oromo raids: The Kistane, were historically raided by neighboring Oromos for slaves. These raids were substantial, with sources from the 19th century describing kistane slaves begging for protection.
Sahle Selassie's protection: When kistane people appealed to Negus Sahle Selassie for protection, he gifted them clothes to make them identifiable and protected from Oromo attacks, as they feared his power.
Menelik II's incorporation: Menelik II’s expansion into Gurage territory in 1888 ended these raids by incorporating the area into his empire, effectively stopping the Oromo slave raids. He did so through military conquest after defeating the Muslim Hadiya and Gurage forces led by Hassan Enjamo at the Battle of Jebdu Meda.
