A 50 year lease is nothing to be excited about. That’s only as long as the life span of two African governments. A land lease in Ethiopia is at least 99 years long. Recognize the independence of a neighboring country while denying the self governance of your own people is the worst crime & hypocrisy of all. I don’t give a sh!t about this deal.

We are the solution for for all the problems In the horn . Abiy should stick with us. Because that's his only hope . There won't be any more wars after this.

Abiy may not have a choice but to stick with the MoU. But here is Djibouti getting really frantic because IMF told them that if Ethiopia shift to Somaliland their economy will shrink by half. So they are doing all they can to sabotage the deal.

The difference is we control 800 thousand KM of coastal land. Ethiopia doesn't lack financial access to the sea. It Lacks Naval access to the sea. How come Egypt can threaten our GERD. Some of ye Ethiopians thinks you are getting free ports. You are not Getting free ports where the natives are not getting any benefits. UAE wouldn't be involved here if there is no profit to make . Business is business. What we are giving Ethiopia is an unrestricted access to our oceans. We are not stupid. We too can benefit from the GERD . We are against Egypt as much as you are against them.

I agree. That is why I clearly separate our opposition Abiy regime from this deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia. It is business deal based on mutual interests of the two nations. Also, younger Ethiopians will find out to their surprise the centuries of contacts and ties between Ethiopians and Somalilanders. Also this - the long term thinking among forward thinking Ethiopians is to move away from beef to fish (for ecological reasons) and the massive Ethiopian population will become a huge demand for Somaliland's fishing industry. So the opportunities are limitless except that the politics of the Horn is backward.

If the worse case scenario is Ethiopia to annex somaliland after 99 years later . What the fukk I am I getting to loose ? Ethiopia is not Amhara , it's not Oromo , tigray or Somali . It doesn't differentiate between you or me . Some of it's best contributers are in jail today. Somaliland self governance is guaranteed for ever under any civilization. We don't fear any one.

10 years will elapse before the port becomes functional. Then four decades later, Ethiopia Airlines’s profitably may decline, in which case the port would be leased again to the highest bidder, forcing Ethiopia to relinquish its entire capital investments.

what the heck do we know about the details of the agreement?

Such important matter shouldn’t be decided in secret by a bunch of conspiracy crazy amateurs. You would think, it will first be studied and then debated in parliament. Not in Ethiopia, certainly not by Abiye. Menigstu h/m and cohorts changed the land policy of the country overnight by directly coping the Soviets land policy without grasping it. Ethiopia pays the price to this day.
I don’t trust the clown and he is not genuine. He looked at all the things he is doing through the narrow lane of how to prolong his hold on to power.
The only thing we can take from the MoU is the idea or the concept of Ethiopia having a brighter option via Somali Land. Above all, the interest of Somali Landers to work with Ethiopia. It should be parked there until a reliable government takes over.

Peoples Dispatch - What’s behind Ethiopia’s overtures toward recognition of Somaliland? January 30, 2024

Elias Amare: There is indeed a danger of war being ignited through the reckless adventurism and miscalculation on the part of Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his Prosperity Party. But the concrete situation on the ground is such that Ethiopia cannot afford an external war. It is already caught up in a quagmire of civil war in the Amhara region. When the fighting started in Amhara last April, the army generals said they would crush the rebellion in weeks. Nine months later, the war is intensifying and the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) is losing ground. It is unable to win against rag-tag militias even within its own borders. Ethiopia is also bankrupt right now. There is hunger and famine in the country. 20 million are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. There is stagflation. The country cannot pay for the debt service of the Eurobond it has borrowed over the last year. It is on the verge of a state collapse.

On the other hand, Somaliand’s President Muse Bihi is increasingly isolated. Large sections of the population in northern Somalia, called Somaliland by the secessionists who control it, have rebelled and declared that they are not for secession. Following a bitter civil war last year, the Somaliland army was defeated in a humiliating way by the unionists in the SSC-Khaatumo region, which is now reintegrating with Somalia. In the area of the Lughaya in Awdal where the coastal access is supposed to be leased to Ethiopia, there has been a massive popular uprising. People there have taken arms saying not an inch of Somali land will be ceded to Ethiopia.

So this meeting between the army chiefs to explore military cooperation between Ethiopia and Somaliland is just propaganda which means little on the ground. Somaliland’s defense minister has resigned in protest against the MoU. The details of the MoU itself have not been released, which is not normal at all. One expects that the parliaments of the two countries would be informed of the contents of the MoU. But it has been kept a secret. Muse Bihi is claiming that as a part of the MoU, Ethiopia will become the first country to recognize Somaliland’s claim to sovereignty. But Ethiopia is backtracking with statements saying it has only committed to “make an in-depth assessment toward taking a position regarding the efforts of Somaliland to gain recognition.”

So this MoU seems like a diversionary tactic by two desperados, Muse Bihi and Abiy Ahmed, who are losing their own domestic legitimacy.

That being said, the dangers cannot be understated. Dealing with a secessionist breakaway as if it were a sovereign state wrecks the charters of the UN and the African Union (AU). It opens a Pandora’s box in Africa, where there are many other secessionist groups. This MoU can set a precedent for other countries to start dealing with such groups, violating the sovereignty and territorial unity of several countries. That can plunge the entire continent into endless civil wars and conflicts.
