Some of ye Ethiopians thinks you are getting free ports. You are not Getting free ports where the natives are not getting any benefits. UAE wouldn't be involved here if there is no profit to make . Business is business. What we are giving Ethiopia is an unrestricted access to our oceans. We are not stupid. We too can benefit from the GERD . We are against Egypt as much as you are against them.

Djibouti will always remain very important port for Ethiopia. It will take decades before somaliland fills the gab. The only reason Ethiopia needs somaliland is because we offer larger territory to exercise it's naval forces . Djibouti is too small for that , and Eritrea is too hostile.

I agree. That is why I clearly separate our opposition Abiy regime from this deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia. It is business deal based on mutual interests of the two nations. Also, younger Ethiopians will find out to their surprise the centuries of contacts and ties between Ethiopians and Somalilanders. Also this - the long term thinking among forward thinking Ethiopians is to move away from beef to fish (for ecological reasons) and the massive Ethiopian population will become a huge demand for Somaliland's fishing industry. So the opportunities are limitless except that the politics of the Horn is backward.

As well know the UN is such a hypocrite institution of the very few, its attempts to re-create Somalia from the ashes after 33 years is laughable. It is like to trying to wake up a dead person from a grave yard. Interestingly, Somaliland has given a lesson to the world. That is, any candidate for independent statehood should pre-qualify (by at least 10 years) of being able to function as a country, politically and economically. Those new independent countries such as South Sudan etc. instantly promoted to qualify as sovereign states now become failures of Africa because they did not undergo through rigorous criteria of pre-qualification.

In terms of business the average Ethiopian do not understand about this MoU. But we do , there is no free lunch. This is how it works , I own the land , some other guy builds the infrastructure , and you bring the customer. All 3 of us owns the business . Ethiopia can have this kind of relationship with any country including Somalia or Eritrea it's business. What Somaliland is offering you to you is completely different. A landlocked country can have super power naval forces in the ocean. That's what we are offering you for the next 50 years.

In addition to that you PAY me a reasonable rent for your naval base which is 20 KM area. In exchange of a fair share of your airline. Feel free to fight any one in my Ocean. And give me my fair share of the Gerd supply line (I mean give me a cheap electricity) . Plus a diplomatic recognition . If you accept this we have a deal . If you don't no problem.

A 50 year lease is nothing to be excited about. That’s only as long as the life span of two African governments. A land lease in Ethiopia is at least 99 years long. Recognize the independence of a neighboring country while denying the self governance of your own people is the worst crime & hypocrisy of all. I don’t give a sh!t about this deal.
