Aklilu Arefayne, the new Eritrean nugget

By Charles Marsault

https://www.velo-club.net/post/aklilu-a ... rythreenne

Prospects/Juniors

While eyes have been on Biniam Ghirmay for the past few weeks, who offered his first World-Tour classic to the African continent by winning Ghent-Wevelgem, other Eritrean talents should emerge in the years to come, and if Ghebreigzabhier, Tesfatsion and Mulubrhan seem destined for a bright future among the pros, several nuggets are already pointing the tip of their noses in the junior category, starting with Aklilu Areyfane, recently crowned African champion in the time trial.

Aged only 17 (he was born on July 7, 2004 in Asmara), Aklilu Arefayne first appeared on the radar last year, when he finished his national championship in second place. A good performance for a rider who was starting his first season as a junior, especially since he did it again by also finishing in 2nd place in the Zoba Maekel, an Elite race, where the competition was logically tougher.

African time trial champion (individual and team) in March, he narrowly missed the treble by taking second place in the road race. Another great performance, to which we must recently add another success at a local event in Asmara, where he beat some of the best Elite riders in the country, including Biniam Ghirmay, who it is true was mainly present to keep the pace of the competition, but the performance is nevertheless remarkable, because according to the young Eritrean,
the race was difficult, and Biniam was in great condition.
Following this new fine performance, the editorial staff of Velo-Club wanted to know more about this new talent "made in Eritrea". The first question we wanted to ask Aklilu logically concerns his profile, and his answer corresponds to what we thought, that is to say that he considers himself first and foremost as a rider, even if he also tells us that he is comfortable on all terrains.

Concerning his objectives for the season, things are clear and already seem well structured in his mind, first of all to shine during the national championships and then to apply for a participation in the world championships which will take place this year in Australia. A goal that seems achievable, if his federation or private donors allow him to finance the trip to the other side of the globe.

Then after the worlds, we will have to hope that the enthusiasm around Biniam Ghirmay will make the recruiters of European teams less hesitant with regard to African riders, even if at the moment T, Aklilu tells us that he was not in contact with any training for next season.

So let's hope that things change in the coming months so that he can realize his dream of participating in the Tour de France, his favorite race.

The Kingdom of Bahre Negash/Medri Bahri, was one of the significant political actors in NE Africa, from the 14-18th C. The strategic location & proximity to the Red Sea, gave the Kingdom major geopolitical functions; foreign interventions, diplomacy & major battles.

The Portuguese portrayed Medri Bahri as an independent republic, administered under a leader with a title of: Bahri Negasi. King Libne Dengel of Ethiopia mentioned Medri Bahri, as one of the powerful kingdoms in his letter to King Manuel of Portugal.

Bahri Negasi stretched its territorial authority, from Buri Peninsula to the central highlands of Eritrea & to the northern part of Tigray. The western fringe, stretched to the western part of Sudan. Debarwa ☝️was the center, but Tseazega became the center later on.

_______________

European maps of Eritrea's Medri Bahri kingdom:

1570 Portuguese map (written as 'Barnagasso', Latinized for Bahri Negasi)

1683 Portuguese map (written as 'Midra Bahr' & colored in yellow)

1776 French map (written as 'Midra Bahr' & colored in purple)

Medri Bahri (Land of the Sea), was an Eritrean kingdom between the 13th-19th century. Its capital was in: Debarwa. What made this kingdom so unique, was the people of Medri Bahri elected their kings to power. Once elected, the king was bestowed the title of Bahri Negasi (King of the Sea).

Medri Bahri's Borders:

The Sea Kings of Medri Bahri claimed, their western & eastern borders stretched from Suakin (E. Sudan) to the Gates of Tears (near Djibouti). To its north, the kingdom was bounded by the Red Sea & to its south, by the Mereb & Setit (Tekeze) rivers

Allies & foes:

Medri Bahri's closest ally was, the Funj kingdom. Its enemies included the Tigray & Begemedir kingdoms, whom collectively were referred to by the 16th-century Portuguese geographic term of 'Abyssinia'. The locals, did not use this word. The Ottomans, were also one of the foes.
