Appetite for Centralization vs. Federation by Ethno-Political Groups:
1. Amhara (High Appetite for Reform/Centralization): Amhara elites and some opposition groups frequently advocate for a centralized or "unitary" government. They often view the existing "ethnic federalism" system (introduced in 1991) as a direct cause of their marginalization and believe it undermines Ethiopian unity and historical identity. Some argue that the federal structure has resulted in unfair regional demarcations and security threats to Amhara people living outside their own region.
2. Oromo (Strong Resistance to Centralization): The Oromo, as the largest ethnic group, largely support a stronger federal system or greater autonomy. Oromo protesters and political groups have historically opposed centralization, viewing it as a mechanism for elite control that restricts self-determination. They have pushed for "genuine self-governance" and often perceive calls for centralization as a return to historical dominance.
3. Tigray (Strong Resistance to Centralization): Tigrayan elites and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) are staunch proponents of the current federal system. They have argued that dismantling the federal structure is an existential threat to the Tigrayan people. They strongly oppose any move toward a centralized "unitary" state, viewing it as an attempt to destroy the federal framework that guarantees their self-governance, which was a core factor behind the 2020-2022 Tigray War.
4. Sidama and Other Ethnic Groups (Mixed/High Resistance): Many minorities, including the Sidama and Wolayta, are often demanding more autonomy (ethnic statehood) rather than less. While some minority groups are concerned about the security repercussions of the federal system, there is widespread anxiety that a centralized state would disadvantage them and reinforce dominance by larger ethnic groups.
Overall National Perspective:
While 54% of Ethiopians prefer a federal system (as of a 2023 survey), the country is deeply split, with about 42% preferring a shift to a unitary or more centralized form of government. The debate is not just over centralization versus federalism, but also over how to define federalism—specifically whether to keep ethnic-based boundaries or move to geographically based administrative regions.

The only viable ideology that people have fought for for a whole century is federation or states like USA preferably citizen based with the right to movement and citizen right to work own property any where. Some modifications can be made.
