What is the appetite among ethnics for centralized Amhara run rule similar to the past?

Post by Odie » 18 Mar 2026, 22:49

The appetite for a centralized government (often advocated by some Amhara political elites) versus a federalist system (favored by many ethnic-based entities) is highly polarized in Ethiopia, with strong resistance among Oromo, Tigray, and many smaller ethnic groups. While a segment of the population, including many urban residents and Amhara nationalists, supports a return to a unitary or less ethnically divided system, a substantial portion of Ethiopia's, particularly Oromo and Tigrayan, nationalists view federalism as critical for self-determination.

Appetite for Centralization vs. Federation by Ethno-Political Groups:
1. Amhara (High Appetite for Reform/Centralization): Amhara elites and some opposition groups frequently advocate for a centralized or "unitary" government. They often view the existing "ethnic federalism" system (introduced in 1991) as a direct cause of their marginalization and believe it undermines Ethiopian unity and historical identity. Some argue that the federal structure has resulted in unfair regional demarcations and security threats to Amhara people living outside their own region.

2. Oromo (Strong Resistance to Centralization): The Oromo, as the largest ethnic group, largely support a stronger federal system or greater autonomy. Oromo protesters and political groups have historically opposed centralization, viewing it as a mechanism for elite control that restricts self-determination. They have pushed for "genuine self-governance" and often perceive calls for centralization as a return to historical dominance.

3. Tigray (Strong Resistance to Centralization): Tigrayan elites and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) are staunch proponents of the current federal system. They have argued that dismantling the federal structure is an existential threat to the Tigrayan people. They strongly oppose any move toward a centralized "unitary" state, viewing it as an attempt to destroy the federal framework that guarantees their self-governance, which was a core factor behind the 2020-2022 Tigray War.

4. Sidama and Other Ethnic Groups (Mixed/High Resistance): Many minorities, including the Sidama and Wolayta, are often demanding more autonomy (ethnic statehood) rather than less. While some minority groups are concerned about the security repercussions of the federal system, there is widespread anxiety that a centralized state would disadvantage them and reinforce dominance by larger ethnic groups.

Overall National Perspective:
While 54% of Ethiopians prefer a federal system (as of a 2023 survey), the country is deeply split, with about 42% preferring a shift to a unitary or more centralized form of government. The debate is not just over centralization versus federalism, but also over how to define federalism—specifically whether to keep ethnic-based boundaries or move to geographically based administrative regions.

The only viable ideology that people have fought for for a whole century is federation or states like USA preferably citizen based with the right to movement and citizen right to work own property any where. Some modifications can be made.
Amara has to find to squeeze itself in the current system or go😛😛This time everybody wants its identity pride and culture saved with self rule!

Change the tricolor የቆምጬ አምልኮ ባንድራ
Change the name of the country
Make more languages: somali, oromia, tigrigna national languages or english primary language
Dissociate political orthodox
Disban all rituals in orthodox in ethnic regions and focus on the gospel. Use local pastors and language. Remove enjera and all komche culture from bible
Remove all statues and memorabilia, names of past rulers that comitted atrocity
More
Otherwise renaisance won’t be complete.

Abiy deserves more power more years to change the country forever so as to forget past abuses🤣
No to KOMCHE abusers to come back. የወጋ ቢረሳ የተወጋ አይረሳም::
Keep all amharas in all regions safe not to give a reason for whining and strip Fano for justification but change the country forever!
