Re: Who are the real Habesha's?
like sesame asked, the term Habesha is loosely given to Ethiopia, and Eritrea, primarily for the convenience of a subject in mind. For example, some Ethiopians are quick to identify Eritrea as Habesha when their intention is their phony claim of the Red Sea. They also claim all Ethiopians to be Habesha, again, because of their greedy owning of what they term the "Southern peoples". So, you can see that the term Habesha is placed anywhere they wanted to place for the sole purpose of ascertain territorial ambitions that do not belong to them.
My understanding of the term "Habesha" (Habesh in Arabic) is meant to apply to Eritrea and the northern peoples of Ethiopia (Afars, Tegaru, and Amhara). The term "Habesha" does not include the Oromos, Ogadenis, and the myriad of southern peoples whom various Ethiopian kings forcefully occupied.
Re: Who are the real Habesha's?
We Somalis believe that habeshas are there amhara , tigray and the Eritreans. The Oromos and afar are not.

You don't need to politicize the name Abesha or Habesha. Yes, the word 'besha' means 'red' in Arabic. But it also means' 'red' in Ethiopic Semitics. As I described above it literally means 'red faced people' what the Greeks translated as Aethiopos ' burned face' people. Yes in ancient times, it referred to mostly northerners but the term 'Ethiopians' covered a very large part of ancient northern Africa and today Abesha literally means Ethiopia & Eritrea.

Oldie Guragie Horus,
Ethiopia is a Greek word for the color black. Habesha or Abbisinian is reference for Tigrigna, Tigre and Amharic speakers. which has a reference to the Axumite kingdom. Your Guragie behind is not part of that.

Habesha are Amhara Tigray Tigrinya gurage argoba .. in reality Highland Eritrea and Highland Ethiopia are the habesha . though the Eritreans get offended by this term i have seen Eritreans that hate this term some eritrean once told me aslo after independence Eritrea removed the term Habesha al together he said it was a close conotation that was used by Ethiopians to claim Eritrean peoples.
Affars are Cushites so are Beja saho related to Somalis
The Harari are semites semetic speakers but since they dont have anything to do with Christian Habesha , they also refer not be called that . or Adari , they feel closer to the Somalis and afars they shared a state with for centuries

Re: Who are the real Habesha's?
Bro Turks recently came to Africa
Arabs have been calling them Habesha since 6th century
also when I talk to eritrean kids 90% of them identify as habesha (especially Orthodox (Akele, Serae, Hamasien) you can find them following habesha pages like @Selam_Central the exception are of course Afar-Nara-Kanuma who don't feel habesha _ and Tigreyit, Bilen and Saho are somewhat Habesha not fully
again Habesha are in the highland once you reach the low lands you cant find habesha
Sudan itself is a Arab name and yet you don't shame the people of Sudan

Re: Who are the real Habesha's?
Until recently, the older Saho, Bilen and Tigrayit (Tigre) in Eritrea considered themselves the real Habeshas. This is fully documented by the Italian social anthropologists who conducted the field research.
If you have been among the Saho Muslims during a Mewlid holiday celebration, they have a beautiful song in Saho that they sing in unison praising the Habesha kings for providing refuge to Mohammed's family, allies and companions. In the song, there is chorus that ends in Habesha! Habesha! Habesha!
To them, the song is praising their ancestors.
The only exception are the Kunama, Nara, and probably the Afars close to the coast.

totally wrong. pasha is not Turkish word, it Farsi or Iranian word. It comes from the word Sha (lord, King) and prior to that it comes from the root pati (lord) , poti ( power) as in the word potential, potent etc. Habesha has nothing to do with power. It has everything to the skin color of people.
Besha means Red in Arabic as well as Guragegna (a language that is very conservative & old. The Aarbic word al-besha. Actually there a place called Al-Besha on Nile river and it means The Red Land.
Re: Who are the real Habesha's?
Habeshaness is a fluid, not a static identity. It is like borders that expand and contract depending on many factors. There are Afro Semetic people from the north Tigrayt speakers as Habeshas past the Afro-Semetic Guragie people in the center who may be Christians or Muslims, Amhara or Tigrayan Jeberti Muslims, Agaw Kushetic people in Ethiopia and Agaw Bilen in Eritrea.
Some former Habesha people along the periphery may not identify themselves now as as Habeshas, along the Sudanese border. The are people in southern India that still identify themselves as Habesha.
There are clusters of people in the Arab world who call themselves as Habeshi, not as ethnic but as sub-ethnic group because they believe they are originally from Abyssinia.
This way or that way, there is a culture, skin tone or colour, way of life, tradition, ancestry ... that can be called Habesha that belongs to the Habesha world, as there are Europeans or Ferenji, Arab, Chinese, Native American world ... to some extent.
The fact remains, the core of the Habesha identity is the old Abyssinia, mostly Ethiopia and to some extent Eritrea.
