There is no strategic advantage of haile Selassie dying in the hands of Italy, that would have further legitimatized their rule and his decision to flee and gather help was right. That being said, he made a big mistake by hanging belay zeleke and ignoring wollo famine. Shewan made a mistake by giving gallas power in order to fight other amhara provinces. Menelik should have done what tewodros did and exterminate invading gallas instead of assimilating them. Infighting has made it so amhara identity could never solidify but that is changing now.

His equality rhetoric was just an excuse to put galla communists in power. Because of him we lost eritrea and [ deleted ] tigres ruled us for 27 years!
