Understanding and acknowledging the problem is one of the most important steps toward finding a solution. This short survey suggests that there is a significant trust deficit surrounding Wurage jewelry retail shops. According to the survey responses, many consumers perceive fraudulent practices ( not integrity, transparency, or customer service) as the primary drivers (fuels) of these businesses.

The next step should be to focus on practical solutions to reduce deceptive business practices and rebuild consumer confidence. Strong consumer protection is a cornerstone of a healthy economy and society. At the same time, it is important to consider the social and cultural factors that may influence business norms within specific communities. If certain unethical practices have become normalized within segments of the Wurage community, they may be viewed by some as an acceptable path to economic success.

Addressing this issue requires raising awareness that deceptive business practices are neither acceptable nor sustainable. Such practices can undermine public trust, harm the broader economy, and serve as poor examples for future entrepreneurs, both within and outside the community. Efforts to promote ethical business conduct, accountability, and consumer protection can help foster greater trust and contribute to long-term economic development.

Brother Abere,

The survey clearly demonstrated that the wuraGay community is very dishonest and deceptive. What is worse is that this community hide this very fact and presented itself as a hard working and economically savvy. As misinformed and foolish most people are, they bought this false narrative and continued to be abused and lose their hard earned money.

The solution is
1) educate the public that wuraGays are theives and people need to be very careful when they need business with them
2) give therapy to wuraGay community teaching them Christian values to honor promises, not to lie and adopt honesty.

Challenges : the wuraGays are now massively shifting to being Pentecostal pastors where they found a larger cashows to skim from. That should also be seen to resolve this chronic issue.

I toured many parts or cities of Ethiopia, while working and living in Ethiopia in the past. I shopped at Jijiga, Dire-Dawa, , Merakto, Dessie/Jiburk/, Bahir Dar - many more.

By coincidence, I came across Muslim shop owners often with long beard and ritual hats on their heads. I was surprised the level moral integrity between those selling in Markato and others. Wurage shop owner provides the most false information about the product he is selling (even with that long beard/ and hut) while those in Jibruk(Dessie, Jijiga) helps you in the buying process. They will allow you to return if not satisfied, the Wurage never does. Ones you left 4 meters; you lost your money. They are thief. You either have to confront right away and tell them straight up that you would smack the hell out of them.

Brother Abere,

My experience is the same. Back in the early days of Smart phones, I went to Merkato to unlock my phone. A good friend of mime recommended three people who own and operate such business. two in Merkato and one in Piasa but both WuraGays.

Since it is a recommendation, I went to the shop to get my phone unlocked to the Ethiopian telecome network. The first WuRaGay quoted me 3 times more than what my friend told me to pay. I was shocked and told him that I was recommended by such and such person. He went down by 30% making the price twice more than what my friend recommended.

I still say no and he tried to explain the level of works needed to unlock. I told him that it won't take more than 10 minutes. He then started to make stupid moaning Gurage noise that was really annoying. He tried to make me look like a very unreasonable person. I then refused the business and headed out. He then said "you are a diaspora and you can afford it". I said to him that it is not his gadamn business and price should be the same if you are a diaspora or lamebora.

I Had similar experience in both other shops and gave up for the day. But luckily a Welayta gentleman who operates the same business charged me 70% less than those wuraGays and unlocked my phone in a mere 20 mimutes which is exactly the price my friend recommended me. I paid the Welayta man twice the amount telling him that I appreciate his work and his eyes were filled with tears and excitement.

The listro wuraGays are very greedy and abusive to consumers. Gladly, most people are learnimg on how to deal with them.

The experience appears to be widespread. Many people who have done business with Wuragay report negative experiences, including fraud, price gouging, and what they describe as a complete lack of remorse for taking advantage of people's hard-earned money.
