Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church does teach that the infant Jesus and His mother, Mary, came to Ethiopia during their flight from King Herod’s persecution.
The Tradition
According to ancient Ethiopian and Coptic traditions—most notably recorded in texts like the Te'amire Mariam (The Miracles of Mary) and other sacred church writings—the Holy Family did not only flee to Egypt. They are believed to have traveled much further south, journeying into the Ethiopian highlands and resting in various locations (including areas around Lake Tana and several monasteries) for about three months. Making their land holly to make people loyal and slave to kings
Because of this, the Ethiopian Church faithfully observes several religious practices:
* Fasting: The faithful observe voluntary fasts to commemorate the hardships the Holy Family endured while traveling in the wilderness.
* Commemorating Hospitality: The church explicitly honors the hospitality shown to Mary and the infant Jesus by the ancestors of the Ethiopian people.
The Evidence
While this is a deeply held belief and a foundational part of the church's sacred history, it is important to separate theological tradition from historical or academic evidence.
* No Biblical or Archaeological Evidence: There are no historical, archaeological, or canonical biblical texts (like the Gospels) to verify this claim. The New Testament only mentions the Holy Family fleeing into Egypt and later returning to the land of Israel.
* Textual and Oral Tradition: The evidence relies strictly on the ancient, apocryphal, and liturgical texts maintained by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which considers these traditions spiritually and historically valid.
