However, its present-day practices differ significantly due to centuries of isolation, indigenous shifts, and reforms implemented by Amhara kings.
Key Differences: Present-Day EOTC vs. Axumite Empire
While Axum adopted standard Coptic Christianity, the modern EOTC evolved unique, culturally blended characteristics:
* Old Testament Influence: Early Axumite Christianity was closely aligned with Mediterranean, Greek, and Egyptian traditions. Over time, the church absorbed deep Semitic and Judaic elements. Today, the EOTC practices male infant circumcision and observes strict dietary restrictions.
* The Ark of the Covenant: The belief that the Ark of the Covenant is housed in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum became central to Ethiopian Christian identity, though this legendary transfer was heavily mythologized centuries after Axum fell.
* Worship Style: Axumite liturgy was simpler and directly tied to the Alexandrian church. Modern EOTC liturgy includes elaborate, drum-heavy dances and the use of Debtera (lay cantors), which evolved later in Ethiopian history.

When the center of power shifted south to Amhara lands following the collapse of Axum, the church and the Solomonic Dynasty implemented significant political and liturgical changes:
* Divine Right to Rule: Starting in the 13th century, Amhara emperors used the EOTC to legitimize their rule over diverse, non-Christian populations. They popularized the Kebra Negast (Glory of the Kings), which claimed the Amhara lineage came directly from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

* Linguistic and Cultural Shifts: The Amhara ruling class elevated the Amharic language alongside Ge'ez. While Axum used Ge'ez natively, centuries of Amhara imperial rule turned the EOTC into a vehicle for Amhara cultural hegemony, which became deeply embedded in the religious hierarchy.
