Negativity and propaganda aside, did Ethiopia increase wheat production per prosperity party promises?

Post by Odie » 22 May 2026, 19:39

Irrespective of political differences, on top of corridor projects, this is a positive gain for PP and need to be praised. It was always my dream to see Ethiopia to feed itself, let alone export. We always dreamt for large scale mechanized farming for that country and digress from age old traditional subsistence farming. Any body familiar with those large scale farming please post name and picture. When we see positive things appreciation is required not to dwell in negativity. We know the Derg አረንጉዋዴው ዘመቻ failed in the past but PP at least succeeded to some extent!

Ethiopia significantly increased its overall wheat production. However, independent agricultural bodies and international organizations note that the massive production surges claimed by the government are highly inflated.

* The Production Increase: Ethiopia expanded wheat cultivation into new lowland regions and increased yields through summer irrigation and improved seeds. As a result, domestic wheat production rose substantially, transitioning the country closer to its goal of self-sufficiency.

* The Statistical Discrepancy: While the government reported record-breaking harvests (claiming up to 23 million tonnes in the mid-2020s, which would place Ethiopia among the top 10 producers globally), independent estimates from the USDA and the UN's FAO suggest the real output is significantly lower, closer to 6 to 7.5 million tonnes.

* On-the-ground Reality: Despite the tangible growth in production, the country continues to face severe grain supply constraints and soaring inflation. Challenges with fertilizer distribution, market access, and high domestic retail prices mean that these production promises have not yet fully translated into affordable food security for all citizens.

Congratulations to the PM despite many hiccups!
This is an achievement and go for more!

Odie,
Yes, the truth is always somewhere in the middle. The west (US and Europe) always want to minimize Ethiopia so that they dump their dead seed on us. The evidence is have you heard of WFO - world food organization in Ethiopia lately ? No. That is what matters.

Your search says "he Production Increase: Ethiopia expanded wheat cultivation into new lowland regions and increased yields through summer irrigation and improved seeds. As a result, domestic wheat production rose substantially, transitioning the country closer to its goal of self-sufficiency." - This is a game changer.

On the other extreme, the government inflates its statistics in order to seek a higher credit rating and rebuild our image . Let us admit it that the Ethiopia as a famine and beggar nation image is being shattered! That itself is a great achievement. IMF driven high cost of living will continue, for sure.

Horus right.
If they don’t like you or you don’t align with their policy, foreign news outlets will obviously despise your achievements. TPLF was their mule and its achievements on maternal death and child mortality improvements were fanfared by outside media including TPLF development figures-exaggeratedly covered that time.
For some reason Abiy is not their darling now.
However the agri transformation and city transformations are really new. I hope the transformation continues in other infrastructures specially ground connection of regions to the level of farmers and regional interconnectivity with short distances to improve transport to and fro remote ports. Air transport is wonderful. The gov should for sure migrate to democracy and building institutions even when slowly but surely. This will earn trust and acceptance for current leaders!
