I entered the heart of Merkato and saw what Gurage people are doing.

My home appliance was damaged, and I heard about repair services in Merkato. So I went to the core of Merkato, where things are made. My appliance was a spice grinder, and I was wondering how these people could treat this device.

So when I talked to some of them, they told me to bring it, and as they said, I took the device. But you should remember that in Merkato, it is very difficult to go freely while carrying such devices, because many can attack you, forcing you to show what you carried. These Gurage people are very dangerous thieves.

Now to the point: I brought the device and met one guy. He was busy with other customers, and I waited for some time. In total, I waited about 3–4 hours there, and I got enough time to study what Gurage people are like.

In that overcrowded place, the situation is very uncomfortable; it is very crowded and unsanitary. Most Gurage people I saw sat idly, shouting at one another. When things were ready, they immediately stood up and carried things to move them to the required place. All I saw was that their job is either selling things or carrying things from one place to another.

The guy who took my device didn’t look like Gurage; to me, he looked Amhara or Oromo. Amazingly, he disassembled the device with amazing skill. But it cost me a huge amount, even enough to buy a medium grinder. Amazingly, I haven’t seen a single Gurage person work like that. That is why they hate getting an education.

The other thing I noticed while sitting there is that Gurage people are perverts; they don’t hesitate to stalk any ladies who pass by. Honestly speaking, in my imagination, they share the same girl among many. How disgusting! You know what? Most prostitutes' homes are located in Merkato, and some of them were already demolished by Abiy. You can see why these prostitutes' houses are more located in Merkato: because Gurage people are pimps who bring customers, and they also enjoy these ladies for a small amount of money.

Wherever Gurage people are, there are unhygienic situations and a high level of disorder. Slums and plastic houses are widespread. In short, these people encourage prostitution and disorder.

Merkato should be dismantled for clear reasons:

It is full of slums and plastic houses.

It is full of thieves and prostitution.

Nah, nah... you're just looking for me, Gurage, are you half Gurage?. Everything is the same—nothing has changed. You're still a learner (temari). You need to upgrade yourself, at least to a primary teacher.

Well, I said most people in Merkato are Gurage because you can easily figure out who is Gurage or not. Why? Because Gurage are the least integrated into society. They intermingle with each other, and as a result, they have distinct physical features that can differentiate them from others. You can easily and boldly tell which people are Somalis among different ethnic groups—even Black Americans define Somalis by their physical features. Secondly, everybody knows where Gurage can be found. The Gurage themselves boldly say they built Merkato single-handedly.

One thing I forgot: did you say Ethiopia will disintegrate because of people like me? Nah... that's not true. These thieves couldn't live without us. They can't stand on their own; they need others by their side to flourish, so don't worry.

Let me repeat one thing: Addis Ababa belongs to Amara and Oromo because they claimed it. If Amara doesn't want it, then Oromo will, without a doubt, uproot all other ethnic groups in a short period of time. That is why they (the others) are still breathing. But the problem is, they are still biting the hand that feeds them. Amara is fighting, while others are trying to steal as much as they can and never stop insulting Amara.

The demolition of the urban slum or Wurage's Merkato Ghetto does not solve the problem. Urban slums developed out of necessity to cope with urban poverty. Given large population desnsity per square in Wurage-land, they migrated to Merkato either as seasonal laborer ( Sheqai, Coolie, etc) and Merkato provides them basic needs. These daily laboroor or street vendors, or shanty shop are often with unskilled labors. They will be forced to squatter in another open place and start another Ghetto, may be many more.
