Tanzania is often cited as one of the more peaceful countries in Africa, despite having over 120 ethnic groups. This diversity could have been a source of division like in Ethiopia, but in practice it has been managed in a way that emphasizes national identity over ethnic competition. Since independence, leaders like Julius Nyerere promoted unity through a common language (Swahili) and inclusive nation-building policies, helping reduce the risk of ethnic rivalry that affects many multi-ethnic states.

A key factor behind this stability is Tanzania’s unitary system of government. Power is largely centralized, and the country is not divided into ethnically defined political regions. This has limited the institutionalization of ethnic identity in politics, meaning elections and governance are less likely to become contests between ethnic blocs. This structure has helped Tanzania avoid the kind of persistent internal tensions seen in Ethiopia.

By contrast, Ethiopia adopted an ethnic federal system in the 1990s under the Tigray People's Liberation Front, organizing regions along ethnic lines which has deepened divisions and contributed to recurring conflict and instability, and genocide over the past three decades.

Unlike Julius Nyerere, Meles Zenawi tribal/ethnic system in Ethiopia, resulted in destruction of the sovereign country of Ethiopia , brought tribal war and genocide. In the case of Ethiopia ethnic mosaic becomes a curse, while in Tanzania which has more ethnic groups than Ethiopia, has been a blessing.
