I heard Amaras become hayenas after sunset, when darkness falls during the night and convert back to human in daybreak.
Herebelow is their process of transition to hayena. Mind you, the explanation is not scientific as all folktales are and this should not be.
Beginning late in the afternoon of a day, they burn wood. By about the time darkness falls, the ash from burnt cools down and not harmless. When they roll over it like a donkey rolls on dirt, they turn into a hayena. Each member of the troupe rolls on the ash until every member of the gang is turned into a hayena.
They then setout hunting. Cannibals. They travel to every village looking for humans, especially young boys playing late outside of their homes, ladies coming from village markets and they may dare adult males without dula or sticks.
This phenomeno did not exist before Menelick settled neftenyas on most fertile lands of Gurage.
