A few years ago, during a visit to the Asmara Zoo, I counted six monkeys, one of which was clearly in distress with something visibly dangling from its rear. I also observed three guinea hens. When I asked the guard, "Where are the lions?'' he simply pointed toward an old hyena named Thomas.
