To call the AU a joke, is an insult to jokes.

African Union Hails Landmark Peace Agreement in Ethiopia, Welcomes Signing Between Amhara Region and FANO-AFPO.

The African Union (AU) today witnessed and welcomed a significant step towards lasting peace in Ethiopia with the signing of a sustainable peace agreement between the Amhara National Regional State and the Amhara FANO Popular Organization (FANO-AFPO).

The signing ceremony, held in Addis Ababa, was attended by H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who represented the continental body, and Mr. Mohamed Abdi Ware, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

In her statement at the event, the Deputy Chairperson
@DCP_Haddadi commended the parties for their commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution. She emphasized that this agreement represents a crucial milestone not only for Ethiopia but for the entire African continent.
Each peace agreement inches us closer to achieving our goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa,
stated H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi.
On behalf of the African Union, I congratulate the parties for reaching this important milestone. This achievement demonstrates the power of African-led solutions to African challenges.
The African Union reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the implementation of this agreement and the broader peace in Ethiopia.

That letter was not worse than AU sponsoring a fraudulent "peace agreement" between Abiy Ahmed's fascist regime and an individual who was officially dismissed by AFPO. The AU chose to become a party in Abiy Ahmed's war of genocide & sexual violence against the Amhara people.

Shame!

⚡️ℹ️ STATEMENT: AAA Denounces IGAD and AUC for Legitimizing the Abiy Regime’s Fabricated “Peace Deal” Amid the Regime’s Ongoing Genocidal War

📅 December 4, 2025 (Hedar 25, 2018 EC)

_______________

Is Abiy Ahmed once again misusing the @_AfricanUnion for his political theatrics—this time to promote a fabricated “peace agreement” between a renegade individual falsely presented as represenative of Amhara Fano Forces and Arega Kebede and his other puppets in the Amhara Region?

Several glaring issues demand clarification:

1st . Basic professionalism is missing — How does an official AU document misspell the word “Regional”?

2nd. Where is the proper authorization? — There is no signature from the head of the relevant African Union department, which raises serious questions about the document’s legitimacy.

3. No such model exists — There is no evidence anywhere in the world of an
Individual-Centered Peace Signing Model.
This appears to be an invention to give political cover to a regime desperate for legitimacy.

The Chairperson of AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and the Director of the Department, Ms. Patience Zanelie Chiradza, owe the public a clear explanation.

Without transparency, the Abiy Ahmed regime and the ruling PP will continue using the AU as a stage for manufactured “peace deals” that misrepresent facts on the ground and undermine genuine efforts toward peace and stability in Ethiopia. This is a shameful spectacle at the expense of the African Union’s credibility and that of IGAD secretariat.

Ethiopia
The AU’s Ethiopia Problem: How a Continental Body Became a Stage for Manufactured Peace

By Ternafi

https://mesobjournal.com/post/au-fake-e ... peace-deal

Dec 6, 2025

AU officials witness a “peace deal” later exposed as a staged signing.

For anyone who has followed the AU’s behavior over the last two decades, the events of December 4 in Ethiopia were not shocking. They were simply the latest chapter in a long, predictable pattern: the African Union being instrumentalized by whichever Ethiopian government happens to sit in Addis Ababa that year.

This time, the AU announced a
historic peace agreement
between the Amhara Regional State and the
Amhara FANO Popular Organization (AFPO).
The optics were grand — a hall set up for a continental peace ceremony, IGAD dignitaries in attendance, and the Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission declaring that Ethiopia had taken
a significant step toward peace.
But the core claim collapsed immediately.

And not softly — it collapsed in public, with documents, with official statements, and with embarrassing speed.

The Individual Who “Signed for Fano” Was Nobody’s Representative — Not Even Fano’s

AFPO, the very organization the AU claimed to have negotiated with, released a statement in Amharic making their position unambiguously clear. The individual who signed the “peace agreement”:

• was expelled long ago,

• holds no role,

• has no mandate,

• and has zero authority to represent FANO.

AFPO even warned that this individual was previously suspected of working with the government — a fact the AU could have discovered with a single phone call.

Instead, a continental institution declared a bilateral peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and… an unaffiliated walk-in.

This was far from mediation. This was propaganda for Ethiopian regime — and badly produced propaganda at that.

IGAD Repeated the Same Failure — And the AAA Called It Out

The Amhara Association of America issued its own statement condemning IGAD and the AU for legitimizing a fabricated “peace deal” in the middle of an ongoing war. Their assessment was blunt, but accurate:

• The AU and IGAD presented the surrender of a handful of fighters as a political settlement.

• Both institutions displayed a shocking disregard for the scale of the war in Amhara.

• Both showed a pattern of subservience to the Prosperity Party regime.

It is difficult to find fault in their conclusion. Ethiopia is not at peace. Fano has not negotiated. Millions remain displaced. Yet the AU and IGAD were willing to act as if a symbolic ceremony could overwrite the reality on the ground.

The AU’s Response to Ethiopian Researcher Sisay (Amoraw) Only Deepened the Confusion

When researcher Sisay (Amoraw) asked the AU for clarification, the institution responded with an extremely revealing letter.

The AU admitted:

• They recognized the signing as an “advancement” toward stability.

• They reaffirmed the “legitimacy” of the agreement…

• While simultaneously acknowledging AFPO’s public rejection of the signer.

To reconcile this contradiction, the AU invented a new phrase:
Individual-centered Peace Signing Model.
In plain language, this means:

If the actual armed groups refuse to negotiate, the AU will simply find individuals willing to sign a paper so it can claim progress.

A peace model not based on real stakeholders, but on whoever shows up. Nothing about this is legitimate, it’s institutional decay dressed up as innovation.

Why Does the AU Keep Falling Into Ethiopia’s Trap?

Because the AU is not an impartial actor on Ethiopia. It never has been.

• In 2007, during Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, the AU and IGAD served as institutional shields for Addis Ababa, legitimizing a foreign invasion.

• Throughout Ethiopia’s civil wars, the AU has remained largely silent or neutralized - never once confronting the governments whose actions drove the crises.

• Even as guarantor of the final and binding Algiers Agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the AU never enforced Ethiopia’s legal obligation to comply with the ruling — not once in 20 years.

• Ethiopia’s threats and military adventurism against its neighbors — Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan — consistently receive a diplomatic blind eye.

This is structural. The AU sits in Addis Ababa, financially dependent on external donors and politically dependent on host-government goodwill. Successive Ethiopian governments have understood this leverage and used it effectively.

Abiy Ahmed is simply continuing a tradition, albeit with more theatrics.

December 4 Was Not a Peace Process — It Was a Propaganda Exercise

The AU’s messaging sounded inspiring on the surface:

• “African solutions for African challenges.”

• “Silencing the Guns.”

• “A milestone for the African continent.”

But none of these words change the facts:

1. No legitimate Fano structure participated.

2. The signer represented no one.

3. AFPO publicly rejected the show within hours.

4. The AU doubled down instead of correcting itself.

5. IGAD played along, reinforcing the same false narrative.

What happened on December 4 was not peacebuilding.
It was the Prosperity Party using regional and continental institutions to create a performance of stability — a performance intended for donors, diplomats, and external observers.

The real situation — continued conflict, mass displacement, and fragmentation — remains untouched.

The AU’s Credibility Crisis Is Now Impossible to Ignore

If the AU wants to mediate Ethiopia’s conflicts, it must first regain credibility. But credibility is impossible when:

• Disinformation from the host government is treated as fact.

• Individuals with no mandate are registered as political actors.

• Conflicts are reframed as resolved based on staged ceremonies.

• The suffering of millions is reduced to a press release.

A peace process built on appeasing the host regime and echoing its propaganda guarantees only one thing:

more war, more instability, and more institutional embarrassment.

Ethiopia’s Conflicts Will Not End Through Staged Diplomacy

Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party is desperate to project control and momentum. For a regime fighting multiple fronts — Amhara, Oromia, internal fractures, economic collapse — a fabricated peace agreement provides useful optics.

But when the AU and IGAD endorse such fabrications, they cease to be mediators.

They become amplifiers of the very instability they claim to resolve.

The continent deserves better.

The people suffering on the ground deserve honesty, not staged harmony.

And African institutions must stop letting themselves be staged as props in the political theatre of Ethiopia’s rulers.

Claims of ‘peace agreement’ between Amhara region and dismissed Fano member face scrutiny as AU, IGAD statements lend credence to signing

December 5, 2025

Addis Abeba – A cascade of contradictory statements and political responses followed the announcement on 4 December 2025 of a “peace agreement” said to have been signed https://addisstandard.com/news-amhara-r ... tie/?amp=1 between the Amhara Regional Government and Masresha Setie, who emerged as a dismissed members of the Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO).

It has emerged that on 29 November, AFPO released a statement announcing the suspension of two of its Executive Committee members, Masresha Setie and Mesfin Abate (also known as Mesfin Kebelegne). The group said the decision followed
a long period of careful and cautious investigation
into grievances raised by members and the public.

It said both individuals were suspended
from their positions as members of the AFAHD Executive Committee and from their organizational membership.
AFPO added that
these two individuals have never been given the mandate to speak on behalf of the organization in a personal capacity by connecting with any institution.
The organization’s statement also accused what it described as
enemies of the Amhara people
of attempting to dismantle AFPO, alleging defamation campaigns, drone strikes on leadership, and efforts to
derail the struggle by enticing internal traitors with money.
The group named Engineer Ashagrie Baye as Commander of its Gojjam Command.

The following day, on 30 November, prominent pro-government digital activists stated that
among the Fano leaders who took up arms and engaged in conflict with the government in the Amhara Region, Captain Masresha Setie and his group surrendered to government security forces
the previous night.

Signing of “peace agreement” sparks dispute

On 4 December, state media reported that “a peace agreement” had been signed between the Amhara Regional Government and the Amhara Fano People’s Organization. Officials said the deal was part of
the region’s broader push to end armed confrontation
and establish
continued peaceful relief for the public.
According to the reports, the signing took place
in the presence of mediators from the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The agreement was signed by Arega Kebede, President of the Amhara Regional State, and Captain Masresha Setie, whom state media identified as representing the Amhara Fano People’s Organization. Officials at the ceremony described the event as
a significant first step toward stabilizing the region,
adding that the conflict
neither resulted in a victory nor ended in war,
and that both sides recognized
the need to pursue dialogue.
Arega said the day marked
the first major peace event for the people of the Amhara region,
adding that
there is neither a winner nor a loser from conflict; everyone benefits from peace,
and describing the agreement as a relief to
our peace-loving people.
AFPO denounces deal as “absolute lie”

Hours later, AFPO issued another statement categorically rejecting the reported agreement. The group said it
has not signed an agreement with the regime it is defeating militarily,
calling the announcement by the
OPDO/Prosperity regime
an
absolute lie.
It also referred to the Amhara Regional Government as
the ghost of the Amhara Regional Government, which ceased to exist two years ago.
AFPO stated:
we only meet the regime on the battlefield,
and denied any negotiations
either directly or indirectly
with federal or regional authorities.

The group called on the AU and IGAD, which state media had reported as witnesses to the signing,
to issue an official statement in the coming days.
It added that Masresha, who signed the deal, had been suspended for what it described as
a mission received from the regime,
and claimed he possessed
a large, unsettled amount of public money
sent to him prior to his removal.

On the same day, Eskinder Nega, Chairman AFPO, released an audio message through various YouTube-based outlets denouncing the reported agreement as
unequivocally false.
He said the organization had dismissed Masresha and warned “our people” to be cautious of such information.
Since its establishment the organization has never made any contact or negotiation with the regime, even for a microsecond,
Eskindir said.

AU and IGAD stand by the signing

Both the AU and IGAD issued statements on 4 December confirming their role as witnesses to the signing.

IGAD said its Deputy Executive Secretary, Mohamed Abdi Ware, witnessed the agreement between the Amhara Regional Government and the Amhara Fano People’s Organization.
IGAD congratulates all parties on this courageous step and urges remaining holdout groups to join this historic momentum for peace,
the statement said.

The African Union described the development https://au.int/en/pressreleases/2025120 ... t-ethiopia as
a significant step towards lasting peace in Ethiopia.
AU Commission Deputy Chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi said the agreement
represents a crucial milestone not only for Ethiopia but for the entire African continent.
She added:
Each peace agreement inches us closer to achieving our goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa,
and said the AU
reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the implementation of this agreement and the broader peace in Ethiopia.
As of the publication, neither institution responded to claims by AFPO that the agreement misrepresented the group’s leadership or that Masresha lacked authority to sign.

Amhara Association of America criticizes AU and IGAD

The Amhara Association of America (AAA) issued a strongly worded statement denouncing IGAD and the AU for what it described as
legitimizing the Abiy regime’s fabricated ‘peace deal’ amid the regime’s ongoing genocidal war.
The group said it monitors the human rights situation in Ethiopia and expressed concern over what it called
the compromised position of key regional and continental institutions.
AAA also criticized IGAD’s leadership, alleging partisanship and stating that the organization had
actively prioritized the narrow political agenda of the ruling OPP regime.
It claimed IGAD’s conduct
destroys any pretense of neutrality or impartiality required for genuine mediation.
AAA also accused the AU Commission of demonstrating
a shocking disregard for the true scale of the war
and said its actions
damage the essential trust needed for diplomatic engagement and relief efforts.
The group called on regional bodies to
cease their tacit endorsements of the OPP regime’s actions
and engage in
meaningful, unbiased efforts to end the regime’s genocidal war
and address structural causes of the war in the Amhara region, which is entering its third year.

“Peace agreements” with no peace

A year ago, in December 2024, a similar agreement was signed https://addisstandard.com/former-ola-co ... ays/?amp=1 between former Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) commander Sagni Nagasa.

Similarly, in June 2024, the Benishangul-Gumuz regional government declared the “successful conclusion” of peace agreements https://addisstandard.com/peace-agreeme ... ovt/?amp=1 with the remaining elements of the Gumuz People’s Democratic Movement (GPDM) and the Benishangul People’s Liberation Movement (BPLM). Despite the announcements, however, both regions continue experiencing security crises.

On 22 November, residents told Addis Standard that more than 40 civilians, including children, were killed https://addisstandard.com/over-40-civil ... e_vignette in an attack allegedly carried out by militants in Bakuji Kebele of Bulen Woreda, Metekel Zone, in Benishangul-Gumuz regional state.

Similarly, a regional prosecutor was shot dead and three colleagues abducted https://addisstandard.com/oromia-region ... ega/?amp=1 on 26 November in an alleged attack by “an armed group” in Hara Kebele, Jimma Arjo district, East Wollega Zone, of Oromia region state, Oromia Regional State Prosecutors’ Association told Addis Standard.

Blen Mamo Diriba calls herself the Executive editor of Horn Review, Research Associate of Institute of Foreign Affairs @ifa_ethiopia and Co-founder of Nexus Forum of Research & Dialogue @forum4research and We all learned from the @AJHeadtoHead program that Bisrat Lemmesa is the founder of Nexus Forum.

These supposedly “independent” institutes popping up everywhere are, in reality, fully controlled from Abiy Ahmed’s office under Billene Seyoum. Their core mission is narrative laundering in the Horn of Africa — with one overriding goal: manufacturing a justification for Abiy’s fantasy of securing a souvenir “sea access” so he can present himself as the most triumphant leader Ethiopia has ever seen.

The web of deception — pretending to be neutral, academic institutions instead of extensions of the Prime Minister’s Office — is laughably transparent. Their mask slipped entirely when they hosted the inflammatory and ad hominem speech by Foreign Minister Ghidewon Timothewos against Eritrea and its leadership. The script, tone, and talking points were clearly prepared by Billene Seyoum.

We will continue tracking these interconnected façade-institutes that fabricate narratives out of thin air, which an army of incompetent social-media zealots happily consumes and amplifies

Blen Mamo Dirriba, is one of the biggest recruits of Abiy and Billene. Yesterday, she published a long, tedious, and deeply flawed piece arguing that Eritrea’s sovereignty is invalid and that the colonial treaties Menelik signed are nullified because Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. I will address her claims separately, but for now she simply needs to read the EEBC ruling, which explicitly explains how the 1935 invasion does — and does not — affect the 1900, 1902, and 1908 treaties.

Haile Selassie had John H. Spencer, who played a major role in achieving the illegal Federation by laundering narratives and bending international law. At that time, Eritrea lacked strong political agency to secure its independence. But today, beyond Eritrea’s strong political, military, and diplomatic presence, we have distinguished custodians of Eritrean history — Alamin M. Seid, Alemseged Tesfai, Zemhret Yohannes, Solomon Berhe, and every conscious Eritrean citizen — who have rigorously documented and continue to narrate the true historical record of Eritrea.

But the question remains: Why did the PP idiots stage the "Peace agreement with Fano" drama? What purpose does it serve when everybody knows it is fake? It is mind-boggling to witness in this day and age such stupidity!

Even Horus, who is willing to believe anything, has not bothered himself with this idiocy! That is what I thought initially, but Horus has fallen for the fake news.

Abiy's war is a psychological war that uses lies and deception as preferred weapons of choice. The reality on the ground, however, indicates that the balance of power has shifted towards FANO that is clearly winning the war, and controls vast territories in the Amhara region.

Abiy's power is limited within the few blocks of Arat Kilo, and the media he controls through his cadres, some of whom operate on this forum 24/7. (No pun intended, Deqi Arawit. You got to eat too!)

My suspicion, maybe it's a stretch, is to later claim & then convince "the international community" that the gov't is for peace but "remnants" of Fano are not and should be designated as leading a terror organisation. Other than that, I don't see anything worthwhile with this charade.

Eritrean Foreign Minister H.E. Osman Saleh yesterday received a high-level delegation from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, marking the successful conclusion of their visit to Asmara.

During the third round of Foreign Office Consultations, both sides explored ways to further strengthen cooperation in: Political dialogue, Trade, investment and economic partnerships, Cultural and educational exchanges and Regional developments in the Horn of Africa

The meeting also recognized the valuable contributions of the longstanding Indian community in Eritrea. A warm and productive step forward in Eritrea–India friendship!
