In terms of vision, patriotism, bravery, and integrity, I would never compare Emperor Tewodros to the Beshasha-born, khat-addicted, pseudo-Pentecostal Abiy Ahmed. Nor would I dare compare the way King Tewodros ended his life—with honor, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to Ethiopia’s pride—to the way Abiy Ahmed will likely meet his fate. Tewodros’s death elevated the Ethiopian spirit, showing that true leaders put their country before themselves. Abiy, on the other hand, will surely flee to the UAE, tail between his legs.
What strikes me, however, is an uncanny similarity: towards the end of his reign, Emperor Tewodros was confined to Maqdala; now Abiy Ahmed is effectively confined to Addis Ababa. He has lost control over much of Ethiopia to Fano, and to mask his fading power, he decorates the streets of Addis with Christmas lights and rushes construction projects without proper planning or engineering. Nearly every headline or News centers on Addis Ababa—as if the rest of the nation no longer exists.
The sun is setting on Abiy Ahmed’s Oromummaa project. Just as Emperor Tewodros’s mighty cannon failed to deliver salvation, Abiy’s drones will bring him nothing but his downfall.
