Your theory is right in generality. What is missing is the absence of documentation regarding Oromo use of force for the word you used "might" and resistance by the specific Gurage groups, no matter how feable and unsuccessful.
Because Gurage has always been financially well-off such as in agriculture, commerce and craftmanship compared to pastoralist Ormos, there appears to be nothing Oromos offered that which Gurages did not have to attract them toward them to the extent they would neglect their language, tradition and history in favor of Oromo.
