First, please don’t engage in cross-selling by bringing Tigray into the equation unnecessarily. I have no objection to the idea of Eritrea being part of Ethiopia, especially considering the reality on the ground—there are many Eritreans living in Ethiopia, just as there are in Eritrea. In fact, the intermarriage rate between Eritreans in Addis Ababa and Ethiopians from various regions remains quite high even today.

However, this should not be conditional on the status of Assab. The return of Assab to Ethiopia should come first, as a separate and non-negotiable matter.

Second, the root cause of much of Ethiopia’s current dysfunction lies in the ethnic-based federal system. This structure must change for the sake of national unity and long-term stability. We must put citizenship above tribal divisions.
