When they pushed back and made it to ruling elite, they were assimilated to the identity of whoever was in power, to the extent of being ashamed of to ethnically self identify. The Gurage through this convoluted political and administrative system had to develop a survival instinct which amounted to existing by hardwork including being a skilled traders whatever petty that was. Education was left for the elite and gun owning ruling class. The uneducated had to be in a job what the feudal, the thieves and gun owners called it inferior jobs. Ethnics not in the ruling or abusing class were given names to make them feel inferior although they had in fact a better culture and mental wealth than the abusers themselves. That culture of demeaning behavior still exists in that country which was devised to make a certain elite group more Ethiopian than the rest.
