Fano to announce a single organization

Post by Noble Amhara » 28 Mar 2025, 22:46

Borkena

In January this year, Fano forces in Gondar and Wollo announced a major merger. Now, the Fano forces across the Amhara region seem to be taking the task of forming a single structure to the next level.

There are reports that they will announce a single organization soon. The story emerged a week after Fano forces launched “Operation Unity.” It was a coordinated military operation across the region, targeting over 35 military camps, from which the Fano force claimed to have achieved significant military gains.

The defense force published a “breaking news” coverage the next day, claiming that it had reversed the Fano offensive—which was said to have been undertaken during nighttime—but it linked the operation to Brigadier General Migbe Haile, a staunch Debretsion ledTPLF military commander. However, the latter denied involvement in the planning or execution of Fano’s “Operation Unity” offensive.

How close is the formation of a single Amhara organization? Fano Marshet Tshayu, spokesperson of Gojjam Fano, spoke to Ethiopian Media Service on Thursday. He confirmed the upcoming major merger, saying, “It is an activity to form a single Amhara organization, and 90 percent of the work has succeeded. The remaining 10 percent will be completed in the days to come.”

He also confirmed that the project is a single Amhara organization. On Thursday, African Intelligence reported a major merger of Fano forces in Gondar—Amhara Fano Unity in Gondar and Amhara Fano Gondar Command. However, the merger appears to extend far beyond the forces in Gondar.

Borkena reported in January about the Wollo and Gondar Fano forces’ merger.

If realized, the Fano merger will be the first major ethnic Amhara organization after the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA). What makes it different is that it is an armed political organization this time. The stated objective of the Fano movement is the reversal of “existential threats” against the ethnic Amhara. Ethnic Amhara have been suffering what appears to be an orchestrated massacre in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia, especially after Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration launched a mechanized military operation in the Amhara region in August 2023, with a stated plan disarm Fano and to finish the operation in a few weeks. The war between Fano and government forces is still underway. Yesterday, Arega Kebede, head of the Amhara region administration, announced readiness to negotiate with Fano in any European country, signaling that the defense force’s claim of a devastating hit against Fano forces does not reflect the reality on the ground. The Amhara region has also inaugurated tens of thousands of militia forces this week. It remains to be seen if they will make a difference in terms of defeating Fano forces.

Meanwhile, there are reports of fighting between Fano forces and government forces across the region. Fano forces claim military gains. Details of casualties on both sides remain unspecified
