Djibouti Conducts Drone Strike in Afar Region of Ethiopia

Djibouti has reportedly conducted a drone strike on the Afar region of Ethiopia. According to local sources, the strike was carried out on Thursday night.
No official statement has been issued by Djibouti or Ethiopia so far. Reportedly Afar community living in Elidad district of Ethiopia was targeted. Afars living in Siyaru kebele of Elidad district were injured and killed in the attack.
Elidad district is situated on Djibouti Ethiopia border. An Afar armed group called Front for Restoration of Unity and Democracy (FRUD) has been fighting Djibouti’s security forces for over two decades. Afar fighters use Ethiopian soil too. FRUD is operating in Djibouti Ethiopia Eritrea border areas. FRUD accuses Djibouti President Ismail Omar’s government of committing atrocities against Afar population in Djibouti. Ismail Omar is from Somali Issa clan. FRUD accuses Somali Issa tribe of denying equal rights to Afar people of Djibouti.
Unknown number of people have been killed in Thursday’s drone strike. Ethiopian Afar region is extremely under developed area. Patients and injured have to travel hundreds of kilometers to Semera city to get medical assistance.
Djibouti is in possession of modern combat drones. In 2022, it purchased TB2 drones from Turkiye.
