I think the question can be answered by answering the "value" of ETB at the two sample time points and how these were achieved: were they artificially set nominal values or real values based on the real purchasing power of ETB. We have to start by knowing the real values first, or stay on the nominal values lane as usual!

If this is not clear, then the use of those percentage comparison is simply the usual woyane created make it believe.

DDT,

When you try to defend the lie, try to pick rather a confusing one even for the common sense. The very indirect measurement is how was the shadow market (Black market) act over time? This informal market measures the true performance of the economy and that of the true value of ETB.

It is true ETB was very strong in His Majesty Emperor Haileselassies so was during Mengistu Hailemariam; it started to weakened during the era of Woyane. However, it appallingly trashed and turned its value into a toilet paper currently in the era of Orommuma. It is natural across countries and time inflation is an intrinsic phenomenon, every currency faces - discounting common. That is why the time value of money ( such as interest rate is in place) to assume the discounting effect. Thus, evaluating CPI (say for a given consumers goods) reveals how inflation behave. However, this change overtime the most bizarre in Ethiopia during Orommuma time. The question is does Orommuma know anything economy or lives and leads the country like an animal band? Simply, it is an ape economy, if apes knows at all rationality.

Aye DDT,
Why don't you compare the salary of workers in 2018 and 2024? Has it increased by 400%?

I heard satan Mamo Killo saying his salary was 16k Birr per month then. By your theory it should be 64k Birr now. Has he got that much raise in just six years?

Didn't I tell you before not compare the the prices of inland products and import commodities? The dynamics to determine their respective prices are totally different.

Petrol is an imported good, while internal salaries are based on the inland purchasing power of the money.

I am not even sure, if petrol prices have indeed increased that much over the last 6 years, if it is then it is not an inland product that the government's macro-economic policies could have influenced.

In a country where almost everybody is a thief controlling everything is almost impossible.

Hi Defend,

Are you suggesting that the ETB has lost its value by by 400% over the past 6 years? Still, PM Abiy's government is in charge of Ethiopian economy and the decisions they took or failed to take caused the 400% price inflation in petrol.

Aye DDT,
What do you mean by your statement below?

"Petrol is an imported good, while internal salaries are based on the inland purchasing power of the money."

What are the "internal salaries " intented to purchase? "Inland products"?

I assume, when you say "inland products", you meant products that are produced internally without the use of any imported inputs? The only "inland product" I can think of is charcoal. Yet if you don't use it where you produce that charcoal then you need to transport it by truck which uses fuel, "imported product?

Do you see how stupid your arguments are?

Ethiopians are struggling to keep up with the new “EV or nothing” policy

Ethiopia became the first country in the world to ban the import of gas and diesel cars. But the country has only around 50 charging stations
.

That means 1 charge station per 22,086 km2 equivalent to the size of Israel!!

In February, the Ethiopian government banned the import of gas and diesel vehicles to boost EV adoption.

EV experts say the decision came too early and the country wasn’t prepared for it.

EV owners struggle with inadequate charging infrastructure and access to spare parts for their cars. Some say they are looking to
go back to gas or diesel-powered cars.

When Araya Belete’s employer asked him to purchase four new cars in Addis Ababa last year, the IT professional quickly settled on an electric model, manufactured by China’s Kas Auto.

Belete chose the car because the Ethiopian government offers hefty incentives for electric vehicles, which also have lower import duties compared to gas and diesel-powered cars.

But using and maintaining the vehicles has been a struggle.

When one of the cars had a technical issue, Belete had to refer to YouTube videos to fix it. Local mechanics did not know how to repair it, and the manual was written in Mandarin. Belete’s employer also had to bear additional costs to install charging points for the cars due to a lack of public charging infrastructure in Addis Ababa.

EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 explained

All new cars and vans sold in the EU as of 2035 should not produce any CO2 emissions. What does this mean in practice? Check out our FAQ to find out.

o reach its climate neutrality goal by 2050, the EU is taking action to reduce emissions from cars as road transport accounts for one fifth of the EU’s CO2 emissions. The EU aims to cut emissions from cars 55% and from vans 50% by 2030, compared with 2021, in order to reach the goal of zero emissions from new cars and vans by 2035.

Dutch MEP Jan Huitema (Renew), who drafted the report about the revision of the EU's CO2 standards for new cars and vans, joined a Facebook live on the new emission rules in July, on which this Q&A is based.

When will there be a ban on the sale of new CO2-emitting cars, including petrol and diesel-driven cars ?

From 2035, all new cars that come on the market cannot emit any CO2. This is to ensure that by 2050, the transport sector can become carbon-neutral.

UK: BAN ON PETROL AND DIESEL CARS PUSHED BACK TO 2035

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pushed the ban on petrol and diesel cars back until 2035
as he sets out the government’s new green policies. Read on for all you need to know.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a revised set of green policies, including the pushing back of the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars by five years. Motorists in the UK will still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars until 2035, and you’ll still be able to buy them second hand after this date.

Sunak claimed in his speech that the original goals to reach net zero emissions, including the 2030 ban on petrol and diesel cars, would “impose unacceptable costs on hard-pressed British families” and that the government can “adopt a more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach to meeting net zero which eases the burden on working people”.

He also said that it should be the consumer that makes the choice to switch to an electric car, not the government forcing you to do it. The Prime Minister also noted the investment which the UK has secured from Jaguar Land Rover to build a new gigafactory, and that he expects that “the vast majority of cars” sold will be electric by 2030 because of falling costs and improved charging infrastructure.

Yes but gas powered cars are still used, no?
So, would this not hasten the transition away from gas cars to electric cars (which is ridiculous, of course)?

I think you must be that troubled Dr. Channe or Dasalegn, the ABN guy. He too lacks the fundamentals, oversimplifies everything. I heard him say somewhere the only influencing factors of a given commodity are simply supply and demand. Some layman like me can make such a stupid statement, in a national parliament, but not somebody who calls himself a Dr.

The supply side could be all okay, to meet the demand. But between supply and demand there is something called distribution, if this too is distorted (flawed), then the chances of meeting the demand's side is very difficult. It takes an effort to straighten that too, specially in countries like Ethiopia where almost everybody is just a thief.

And for your tiny head I add the following: in a given product there are input materials, and their ratio matters.

If you take the charcoal you mentioned, yes there could be a need to transport it. That requires fuel clearly. But what is the proportion of that input in charcoal in determining the final price of the item? Can you guess for us what percentage that could be? I don't think a tiny head like yours can guess that.

DDT what are you trying to say here. the numbers don't lie. inflation within the last 5 years on most items, local and imported, including fuel had risen by a whooping 500% and with all indication it will get worse. and this is not a result of a booming economy, where more people have money to spend, but an economy that has collapsed because of many reasons. so unless it is your duty, as one miskin PP cadre  , to defend everything what is your point???

There is one fact that we have to accept: Simply put, at this stage, maybe Ethiopians are not capable of governing themselves. It is not only for clown Abiye Ahmed Ali but that goes to Melese and Menigstu as well.

Yes, before the revolution Ethiopia had a brighter and smarter group of people in charge who have been trying hard to learn on the job. But then the EPRP led revolution ate them alive.

Ethiopians has to come up with a new approach. Remove Abiye, stabilize the nation and pay handsomely to a non political and experienced foreigners to show us the rope.
It only take one generation.
