Ukraine has received F-16 with latest avionics and radars for missile guidance - MP
05.08.2024 16:26

Ukraine has received the first batch of F-16 aircraft. It is expected that the transfer of these aircraft will be an incentive for the countries of the respective coalition - the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Norway - to deliver them as soon as possible.

This was stated by MP, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA Yehor Chernev, Ukrinform reports citing the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.

"Ukraine has received the first batch of F-16 aircraft. Next, we expect other aircraft from the countries of the respective coalition - the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Norway," he said.

According to Chernev, active work is underway to ensure that other countries, including the United States, join the coalition.

"This way, we will be able to get the necessary minimum of aircraft to cover our skies and repel the occupiers' attacks with missiles, drones and aircraft. The delivery of the first F-16s should be an incentive for our other partners," the politician said.

Chernev said that there is a consensus among the allies that it is necessary to look for new opportunities to increase the combat aircraft fleet and strengthen Ukraine.

"We have received a modern modification of the F-16 with the latest avionics, radars for targeting missiles, etc. We are also working on all possible options so that we can equip these aircraft with long-range weapons manufactured in Europe and the United States. The process is ongoing, and I hope that we will see such missiles in Ukraine," the MP stressed.

He added that training of Ukrainian pilots for F-16s and technical staff to maintain these aircraft on the ground remains an important issue.

"Currently, there are not many bases in the world for this, so we are looking for opportunities in different countries to increase the number of our specialists," the MP concluded.

As reported by Ukrinform, on 4 August, during the celebrations for the Day of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky presented F-16 fighters in the Ukrainian sky, emphasising the beginning of a new stage in the development of the Air Force.

Russia is pulling reserves from battleground regions in Ukraine to counter incursion, Ukrainian commander says
From CNN's Daria Tarasova and Caitlin Danaher

Russia has pulled reserves from key battleground areas in Ukraine and Russian-occupied Crimea in an effort to hold back Ukrainian advances into Russian territory, a Ukrainian military commander told CNN Wednesday.

Dymtro Kholod, commander of the “Nightingale” battalion, told a CNN team on the ground in Sumy that the military has “information” suggesting Russian soldiers are being pulled from Zaporizhzhia, Crimea, and Kharkiv to halt Ukraine’s continued advances into Russia’s Kursk region.

(The Russians) are now trying to stop our advance; they have pulled in reserves, which has benefited our defense forces in other areas, because it has become easier to work there,” he said.

Of course, it will be harder for us to advance further, but we will still advance,” he added.

Alongside his unit, Kholod said he joined Ukraine’s forces on day one of their surprise cross-border incursion into Russia and only left the Kursk region on Wednesday.

Russian troops were shocked by Ukraine’s “rapid advance,” Kholod said, adding, “They were in tactical encounters and willingly surrendered to the defense forces.”

They are ready to die for our land for some reason, but for some reason, they are not ready to die for their own land,” he said.

On Ukraine’s National Flag Day, two flags signed by soldiers of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade and the 225th Separate Assault Battalion, who are performing combat missions in the Kursk region, were raised on the Ukrinform building.

“Greetings from Kursk,” “Ukraine is above all!”, “Ukraine is us,” “Victory is ours,” the defenders of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade wrote.

“Dear Ukrainians! The soldiers of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade congratulate you on the National Flag Day of Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!” the 2nd mechanized battalion of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade said in a video greeting.

Another flag was sent to Ukrinform by soldiers of the 225th Separate Assault Battalion.

“Slaves are not allowed in paradise!” emphasized the commander of the 225th Separate Assault Battalion, call sign “Sirko”.

“Forward to victory!”, ”From the Kursk region!” added the battalion's soldiers.

As reported by Ukrinform, as of August 20, the Armed Forces of Ukraine control more than 1,260 square kilometers of territory and 93 settlements in the Kursk region (Russia).

The offensive operation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region began on August 6, 2024.

"Putin's regime will collapse without warning"!
Felix Englen

The Russian regime, led by Vladimir Putin, will collapse quickly and without warning. This is what Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza told The Guardian, nearly two months after he was released from a Russian prison in the high-profile prisoner exchange between Russia and Western countries. In the interview, he recounts the taxi ride to the airport in Moscow and how an FSB agent told him to take a good look outside because he “would never see his homeland again.”

- "I just laughed in his face and said, 'I’m a historian. I don’t just believe, I know that I will return home, and much sooner than you imagine,'” said Kara-Murza, who now lives in the UK.

Historically, regimes in Russia collapse within a few days, he continues.

- "Both the Romanov empire in the early 20th century and the Soviet regime at the end of the 20th century collapsed in three days. That’s not a metaphor, it was literally three days in both cases.
"

How stupid was Putin to invade Ukraine?
Elena Gold Oct 16

According to the book by American journalist Bob Woodward, Putin decided to invade Ukraine because of his delusional convictions.

The book describes a conversation between Vladimir Putin and CIA Director William Burns in the fall of 2021 in Moscow.

Burns didn’t meet Putin in person — the Russian “strongman” was too chicken to meet him in face-to-face. At the time, Putin demanded from everyone who met him to go through a 2-week quarantine.

Putin’s chief foreign policy adviser and former Russian ambassador to the U.S. Ushakov left Burns alone in an office near the Kremlin and told him to wait for the phone call.

https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg- ... c10d8cbca9
Yuri Ushakov.
When the phone rang, Burns recognized Putin’s voice.

Putin started with recalling Burns’s time as the U.S. ambassador to Moscow 14 years earlier. Then he stopped and waited for Burns to deliver his message.

Putin already knew what Burns was going to say.

Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia’s Security Council, already briefed him.

Burns spoke:

We are alarmed that you are seriously considering a major invasion of Ukraine. That would be a mistake. If you do that, here’s what we’re going to do,” stated Burns.

He continued, as instructed by President Biden, detailing the intelligence the U.S. had on the movement of Russian troops. He also outlined the strong measures the U.S. was prepared to undertake in response.

We are going to unite the West and impose tough, devastating economic sanctions. Ukraine is a sovereign state, and we will continue to support it. We are also adjusting our military posture in Europe. This is not a threat, but a statement of what we will do in response. You should know that the repercussions will far exceed those you faced in 2014. The United States will ensure that Russia is cut off from SWIFT, isolate you diplomatically, and help Ukraine defend itself.

Putin waited until Burns finished — and then responded with a long story, reiterating the themes he repeated in his public speeches — without disputing Burns’ description of Russia’s preparations to invade.

Ukraine is weak and divided. It’s not a real country. Russia’s interests demand that we control Ukraine’s choices,” Putin stated.

In Putin’s view, President Zelenskyy wasn’t a legitimate leader, the Ukrainian government wasn’t legitimate either. Putin alleged that Russians in Ukraine were discriminated against and persecuted.

Burns asked him: “With an army of 180,000 to 190,000, how do you plan to control a country of 44 million people who do not want to be ruled by Russia? How will you manage that?

Putin did not respond to that.

We now know that the FSB department handling hybrid operations in Ukraine assured Putin that they had paid enough people in Ukraine to ensure that Ukrainians would surrender. But the FSB was stealing money like everyone else in Russia (maybe more): most operatives were simply submitting fake receipts and pocketing the cash allocated to paying assets.

To Burns, it seemed that Putin’s appetite for risk had grown and he truly believed what he was saying.

As Burns departed Russia, he sent a cable to President Biden from his plane, “I am left with a very strong impression that Putin has already decided to go to war.”

Bob Woodward is the legendary journalist who broke the Watergate story in 1972, as a reporter for ‘The Washington Post’. The scandal led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon.

Putin believed he bought enough traitors in Ukraine to win, and he was convinced that Zelenskyy would evacuate as the Russian troops were approaching Kyiv — and if Zelenskyy didn’t run away, Putin was sending his best special forces unit to kill the Ukrainian president and other members of his government.

Putin would have run away.

Zelenskyy didn’t.

Putin believed his corrupt underlings and in his own corrupted worldview.

He still hasn’t changed them.

And that’s why Russia will lose.

What do you think of Ukrainian President Zelensky's advice for JD Vance to study World War II?
My grandfathers fought in WWII.Sep 27
Elena Gold

As Ukraine is fighting for its survival as a sovereign nation, JD Vance, who is Trump’s pick for Vice President, verbalized his plan how to end the war in Ukraine — which basically sounded like Putin’s plan.

Obviously, Ukrainians were shocked about Vance’s publicly announced “plan” — and it was a big deal in Ukraine. It was the first time that Trump’s running mate verbalized in such detail what the plan “to solve the war in Ukraine in 48 hours before he’s even inaugurated” actually includes.

This is likely why Zelensky mentioned Vance and his plan at the first public appearance during his visit to the United States — he’s the president of a country that needs to survive. The country fighting for its very existence.

And I think, Zelensky was as diplomatic as he could possibly be.
As you may know, Zelensky is a Ukrainian Jew and his grandfather was the only sibling from the family who survived in WW2 — his 3 brothers were killed.
• Zelensky’s grandfather, Semyon Zelensky, joined the Red Army in 1942 as a teenager, and became a commander of a mortar platoon.
• All 3 of Semyon Zelensky's brothers also fought against Nazis, and none of them survived.
• Their parents — Volodymyr Zelensky's great-grandparents, were murdered along with more than a million other Jews during the Nazi occupation of Ukraine.
So, for Volodymyr Zelensky the WW2 isn’t a paragraph in a history textbook.

It’s the story of his family. He knows just too well what a genocidal occupation means — and Russia is waging a genocidal war against Ukrainians right now. Russian top officials (Dmitry Medvedev) openly say that Russia’s goal is to exterminate Ukrainians.

I hope this gives some context to Zelensky’s words.

This is what Zelensky said in Pennsylvania:

"The idea that the world should end this war at Ukraine's expense is unacceptable.”

“Let Mr. Vance read up on the history of the Second World War, when a country was forced to give part of its territory to one particular person. What did that man do? Was he appeased or did he deal a devastating blow to the continent of Europe — to many nations, broadly, and to the Jewish nation in particular? Let him do some reading.”

And I think, Zelensky was very diplomatic in his choice of words.

In response, JD Vance tried to claim in an interview that the plan he laid out before was "not a plan" but "one possible scenario."

And then Vance said, "But look, I don't appreciate Zelensky coming to this country and telling the American taxpayer what they oughta do. He oughta say thank you to the American taxpayer."

Which is what Zelensky actually just did — thanked not only the American taxpayers (he thanks the countries and their citizens for their support of Ukraine in his speeches and posts daily — I don’t think JD Vance actually knows about it) — but also the American workers who directly help Ukraine.
And about history, Donald Trump now keeps saying that “Russia won WW2”.

Which is utter rubbish (pardon my French), as it was the USSR (including millions of Ukrainians — as well as Uzbeks, Azerbaijanis, Kazakhs and more) that fought in that war — with American weapons.

Without the American weapons, trucks, equipment, clothing and food, the USSR would have fallen to Nazis.

Russia claiming this victory is Putin’s narrative.

Vance and Republicans can be upset about Zelensky’s words, but in fact they should stop making statements that have nothing to do with history and facts — at least about Ukraine.

JD Vance verbalized a “plan how to end the war in Ukraine” by basically repeating Putin’s plan that allows Russia to keep control of the occupied territories.
And really, I’d love to support Republicans.

But their top 2 guys keep talking how they would just dump Ukraine — after the USA forced Ukraine to give up its nukes… TO RUSSIA!

In 1994, in exchange to some “security guarantees”, Ukraine surrendered its nuclear weapons — as well as carriers such as ballistic missiles and planes — to Russia, under the Budapest Memorandum. In return, the U.S. vouched to stand for Ukraine’s security in case of external aggression.
For the U.S. to dump Ukraine when Russia invaded would be the ultimate treachery.
If the USA does that, then we in Australia should probably rather be allies with China.

What is the real truth behind the Ukraine/Russia war?

Damien Leimbach Former Army, former Air Force

Oil. Oil, coal, gas and other resources. And this thirst will ultimately cause the breakup of the nation.

Russia inherited the crumbling infrastructure and paleolithic manufacturing capabilities of the Soviet Union. That wasn’t their fault. What they did about it later was their fault.

The country devolved into an oligarchy, where former Soviet industries (like Media, manufacturing, coal mining and oil refineries) were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Of course, the only people with money at that time were gangsters and high level politburo members.

These people, behaving like gangsters, simple squeezed the newly acquired properties for cash, they didn’t feel the need to improve them as they essentially had a state sanctioned monopoly.

Russia declined into a petrostate. With no real manufacturing capability or technology to export, oil and gas accounted for almost 25% of Russia's GDP and taxes on those are 45% of Russia's federal budget. The country lives and dies by oil. Which is fine, as long as prices are high and people are buying.

So having said that, two calamities hit Russia at about the same time in 2009. The world price for natural gas fell, and Qatar announced plans to build a pipeline to Europe. Russia had a long history of pressuring Europe into favorable trading terms, as Europe got as much as 45% of its gas from Russia. Falling prices were bad enough, but a competing source? Ruinous. Disastrous. Unthinkable.

One of the proposed routes to Europe was through Syria. And we all know how that went. Assad all but stated outright that he was declining the pipeline transit access, to protect the interests of his ally, Russia and their stranglehold on European energy.

But oil prices were still pretty high, even as natural gas was staying low. And guess who has a lot of untapped oil reserves?

Ukraine. And guess where the oil is? Crimea! So guess where the Russians invaded in 2014? That's right! Crimea!

Oh and guess where they discovered about two trillion dollars worth of natural gas? Luhansk and Donetsk, exactly the same territories that suddenly need to be de-nazified!

What a happy coincidence for Russia that the exact same places Russia remembered suddenly was always theirs (Crimea) and full of ethnic Russians that need to be saved from Ukrainian jewish nazis (Luhansk and Donetsk) are EXACTLY the same places they invaded.

Edit: Special thanks to Łukasz Rzepiński for pointing out that Eastern Ukraine is also full of rare earth metals and lithium deposits valued over ten trillion dollars. I mean, you’d have to be blind not to see what’s happening here.

Since the invasion began in February, Russia (according to the Canadian geopolitical risk firm SecDev and Ukrainian mining and steel industry executives) has seized: 41 coal fields, 27 natural gas sites, 14 propane sites, nine oil fields, six iron ore deposits, two titanium ore sites, two zirconium ore sites, one strontium site, one lithium site, one uranium site, one gold deposit and a significant quarry of limestone previously used for Ukrainian steel production.

It’s all about salvaging their starving economy by invading and commandeering Ukraine's fossil fuel industry.

It’s all about denying resources to the west and making them more dependent on Russia.

Of course they didn't plan on losing the war, they thought they could occupy the country in two weeks, have a bunch of fake elections and no one would do anything about it till it was too late, just like Crimea.

But the war is taking longer than they thought, 100,000 Russians are reported dead. The Russian army is decimated. The sanctions are hitting harder than they thought, China is not helping like they thought, the people are protesting, the people are fleeing the draft, the people are asking questions.

My prediction. The oligarchs will abandon Putin as they grow tired of the sanctions, and he will likely be assassinated or jailed where he will promptly be suicided. Without his iron rule, Russia will balkanize into a dozen smaller kingdoms, which no other country will attempt to stop because everyone is tired of their [deleted]. The local power brokers will consolidate their strength and declare themselves autonomous regions, mostly along ethnic lines.

Those that inherit nukes will be paid off by the international community (in food or fuel) to give them up. Those that won’t give them up will be shown the same hospitality that Seal team 6 showed Bin Laden, and the next guy will happily sell them to the west in exchange for a new power plant.

Russia is dead. It just doesn't know it yet.
Absurd. Preposterous. Oil and gas not the reason for Russia/Ukraine war.
3 reasons
1. Extreme hatred toward anything Russian: Russophobia
2. Ukraine's strong intention to join Nato and allow Nato establish its bases close to Russia
3. Refusing to allow regional autonomy to Russia-dominated eastern regions such as Donesk and allow them to use and develop their Russian culture and language.

Is Vladimir Putin seeing hope in Ukraine now that his allied President Trump is back?

Reportedly, Russians suddenly had a change of heart after Trump was confirmed as the winner of 2024 U.S. presidential elections: Russian propagandists, who were positively inclined towards Trump, began expressing doubts that his presidency will be good for Russia.

After Trump’s victory speech, where he unexpectedly changed his tune from “I’ll end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours” to “I’ll ensure the drop in oil prices and Russia won’t be able to continue the war”, the first prominent voice to doom-monger was Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska.

“Looks like $50 oil will be everywhere by May [2025],” posted Deripaska.

In his speech, Trump said that the U.S. has more oil than Saudi Arabia — and even more than Russia, and promised to bring down the oil prices.

By the looks of it, Russians already had some talks through trusted channels with Trump’s administration-elect, and what they’ve heard didn’t inspire them — so the Russian propaganda was quickly ordered to put on brakes and don’t peddle Trump’s victory as much as in 2016 (it was an embarrassment how much Russians celebrated in November 2016 — and how disappointed they were with what Trump actually did).

It appears that Russians thought that Kamala Harris would win the race — I suppose, they bought the story that Democrats rigged the election in 2020 and “were going to do it again” (that’s what Putin would most certainly do) — and preparing to scream “election fraud” and cause mass protests, using Russia-recruited operatives in the U.S. to stir civil unrest.

But now, with Trump confidently winning and Harris calling to uphold the choice of the American people, this task looks insurmountable.

Today, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a long phone conversation with Donald Trump — while the Kremlin hasn’t officially sent Trump greetings with his victory.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that Putin didn’t congratulate Trump because the U.S. was “an unfriendly country”.

“I had an excellent call with President Trump,” wrote Zelenskyy.

“We agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance our cooperation. Strong and unwavering U.S. leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace.”

The phrase “just peace” is Zelenskyy’s code word for “no territorial concessions to Russia”.

Previously, Trump promised to end spending money on Ukraine — but earlier he spoke about the idea of assistance in the form of lend-lease: Ukraine would get military aid on the same conditions as the Soviet Union in WW2.

In other words, America would continue sending the aid, but Ukraine would owe America money for that. So, ideally, the U.S. would give Ukraine what it needs to kick Russia out of Ukraine — and Ukraine would pay back when it can.

Meanwhile, the U.S. would be able to update its own weaponry and get ready to deflect the WW3 from the position of strength, not weakness — while sending its old machinery and equipment to Ukraine for utilization.

Reportedly, Trump got sizable donations to his campaign from American weapon manufacturers. Weapons is something that America still makes on its own soil.

The fact of Russia not feeling too optimistic now about Trump’s upcoming presidency was immediately confirmed by the frosty post by Russia’s foreign ministry:

By the sound of it, whatever message Russia got through the grapevine from Trump’s administration-elect, it turned them grumpy.

Trump promised “to solve the Ukrainian war” before his inauguration, let’s monitor what’s happening.

One thing for sure, he didn’t manage to do it “in 24 hours after getting elected”.

If oil prices are the key strategy, this could take another year.

Or there is something else we don’t know about.

Zelensky at Budapest summit: We need enough weapons, not support in talks
07.11.2024 16:11

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine needs a sufficient amount of weapons, rather than support in talks with Russia.

He said this in his speech at a summit of the European Political Community in Budapest on Thursday, the text of which was published on the website of the head of state, Ukrinform reports.

"I thank all of you for your support of Ukraine and our people. We are defending ourselves not against Russian words, but against Russian attacks. Therefore, we need sufficient weapons, not support in talks. Hugs with Putin won't help. Some of you have been hugging him for 20 years, and things are only getting worse," Zelensky said.

He added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin "thinks only about wars and will not change" and that "only pressure can put limits on him."

"We have built a clear diplomatic system capable of pushing Russia toward a just peace. Most of the nations here have participated in this effort for effective diplomacy. Thematic conferences have already covered every point of the Peace Formula. Nuclear safety, food security, energy, the return of prisoners and deported people to Ukraine, and full enforcement of international law, and much more. We need to push Russia towards this. And a just peace will be a shared victory. The Plan of Victory is on your table. So Ukraine was the first to propose changing our common strategy to reach, and soon, a just peace," Zelensky said.

He stressed that the war is being fought on Ukrainian soil.

"Ukraine is grateful for all the support from our partners, we are open to any constructive ideas to achieve a just peace for our country. But it is up to Ukraine to decide what should and should not be on the agenda for ending this war," Zelensky said.

He also added that "the bill for this war should be sent to the Russians, not to Ukraine."

"So that Russia can no longer advance its false claims to everyone around – from the Baltics to the Balkans. Any country, any leader who respects international law and sits at this table should understand that predators always demand more and more gain," Zelensky said.

He also said that "during this war, we have seen certain European approaches fail."

"For example, the closer a country is to Russia, the weaker the concept of neutrality becomes. The rapid accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO showed how European and Alliance leaders truly envision guaranteed security – not through words, but through NATO. Ukraine has taken note of this," Zelensky added.

"De Oppresso Liber": What Trump's national security advisor pick means for Ukraine
14.11.2024 20:20

The National Security Advisor is one of the most important American positions that impact Ukraine.

Last week I was honored to speak at the Kyiv Economic Forum about the U.S. elections, after President Trump had won. As we all know, U.S. support is critical for the future of Ukraine to defeat Russia and many in Kyiv are concerned whether this assistance would remain in place. Prior to the election, considerable uncertainty was about to who would be president. Now that this uncertainty has ended, there is now more uncertainty as to how Donald Trump and his administration will lead in relation to Ukraine. I suggested to the audience at the Forum and wrote in a column for Ukrinform to watch the four most important Trump appointees to help determine the future U.S. support. The four positions are the National Security Advisor (in the Biden administration it’s Jake Sullivan), the Secretary of Defense (currently Secretary Lloyd Austin), Secretary of State (currently Antony Blinken), and CIA Director (Currently Bill Burns). I spoke at length about the most important, in my opinion, of these four key positions with regards to Ukraine. And that’s the National Security Advisor.

This week the appointments have been announced but, again, there’s uncertainty as to what they will do once they are in the role on January 20. CIA Director will be John Ratcliffe, the former Director of National Intelligence during Donald Trump’s previous term. The Secretary of State will be Marco Rubio, a Senator from Florida. The Secretary of Defense will be Pete Hegseth. And the National Security Advisor will be Congressman Mike Waltz. All four are perceived as “hawks” against Russia, China, and Iran.

There are some clear differences between President Trump’s first term appointees and those picked for the second term. The Trump team during his previous presidency included several very prominent personalities and retired general officers. That didn’t go too well. The clashes between generals Mattis, Kelly, Milley and McMaster vs. President Trump are well known and widely documented. This cabinet will not be a ’team of rivals’. All these people are loyal to Donald Trump. Opponents raise concerns of a “dictatorship” buildup because everyone on the team firmly sticks to a general line, which poses a risk of a rigid “group think”. Supporters say this is a natural development of an overwhelming election win and a mandate to implement President Trump’s vision. Regardless, we all await the reveal of President Trump’s policies, but they might not be announced until he takes office on January 20, 2025.

It is also important to note that after the election, both House and Senate are now firmly in control of the Republican Party. Under Trump, the Republicans will control the Presidency, the House, and the Senate. What this means is that they control the agenda, the bills that go forward, and the amount of funding for all major subjects including Ukraine. That puts even more power in the President’s hands than normal wherever competing interests might arise within Congress.

For Ukraine there were three options with the new administration, and the first two were Bad to Worse.

1. Do more of the same (Bad)

2. Do less of the same (Worse)

3. Do more of something different (Best).

President Trump now has incredible authority, more so than normal such as when a divided Congress held up the Supplemental for six months that expectedly turned out really damaging to Ukraine. Now is the time for him to wield incredible power to achieve the best interests of the United States National Security objectives.

It is inconceivable that President Trump will abandon Ukraine. This is not “another Afghanistan”. NATO is firmly and unanimously behind Ukraine, too. The United States House and Senate are 80% behind Ukraine. By abandoning Ukraine, would lose the support of the majority in Congress that he needs to pass his domestic agenda. Notwithstanding it goes against 100 years of American international leadership to support freedom-loving people.

With regards to President Trump saying he could solve the war in “one day”, while that seems infeasible it is his intent, he has tremendous powers that have not been utilized by the United States against Russia in economic, political, and military terms. He has been President before and he knows the enormous powers at his disposal. Ukraine should see Trump having so much power with both houses of Congress as a tremendous strength in their country’s favor.

The historical parallel would be the worst international crisis in the past 50 years for the United States – the Iranian hostage crisis that started November 3, 1979, and lasted until Ronald Reagan’s inauguration on January 20, 1981. Twenty minutes after Reagan was sworn in, the hostages were released from Iran, and an aircraft lifted off the Tehran Airport with 52 previously held hostages. Reagan is credited by his supporters as having solved a 444-day hostage crisis on his first day in office. So the precedent has been set to solve a major international crisis on Inaugural Day with a new administration taking over the White House. Reagan’s supporters claim the Iranians were terrified of the incoming president and released those people out of fear. The supporters of outgoing President Jimmy Carter, on the other hand, claimed that the Iranians merely held the hostages until Carter was out of office, and would have let them go no matter who was the new president. But the precedent was set anyway. President Trump was 34 years old on that day, and remembers those dramatic developments well.

Many Ukrainians are currently oppressed in occupied territories. I believe the Trump administration will make it a priority to liberate the oppressed and it comes down to the character of the new National Security Advisor, Colonel Mike Waltz.

December 2022: Rice, Chairman McCaul, General Milley, Representative Waltz, and former Attorney General Barr, discussing the need for cluster munitions for Ukraine.

Many have written about his background as a three-term Member of Congress, former U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret), generally referring to him as a hawk. But very few have mentioned Waltz’s values and those of the organization (U.S. Special Forces) that he represents in Congress. He is not only an SF officer, he is the first one in history to become a Member of Congress. The U.S. Army Special Forces is the most highly trained of the Special Operations soldiers that the United States has in the two million-strong military. All U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) undergo an intense two-year training program. They all have to speak foreign languages because they are trained in unconventional warfare. Their motto is “De Oppresso Liber”, or “To Free the Oppressed”.

The 10th Group Special Forces, founded in 1952 and dedicated to defending Europe for 72 years, was pulled out of Ukraine just weeks prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion. These soldiers wanted to stay and fight alongside Ukraine Armed Forces. It was a political decision by the U.S. President’s team, most likely, as I understand, by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

There is much debate in Washington, DC and Brussels that the fear of escalation has led to the slow “drip- drip-drip” approvals of both weapons systems, aircraft, and ammunition for Ukraine. Even when the Department of Defense and Congress were unanimous on certain supplies, it is said that at the choke point stood Jake Sullivan. The latter has neither any military background nor training in weapons systems to make those judgments. Sullivan decides, not advises. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and former President Dmitry Medvedev have continued to threaten escalation, they have thus had the U.S. National Security Advisor hold back defense capabilities for Kyiv. Now, with Mike Waltz, the role of the National Security Advisor will be restored to “advising”, and President Trump will make all major decisions.

In my opinion, Ukraine should be very hopeful of the change. Former Special Forces officer Mike Waltz is not taking the job with the plan to abandon the oppressed Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories. I believe he is to promote “De Oppresso Liber” as per his nature and values. And I believe President Trump has a plan to bring all the resources of the United States to bear to end the war, by liberating Ukraine, and making NATO pay for the permanent international force along the new DMZ between the 1991 borders of Ukraine and Russia.

Without bases in Syria Putin loses positions in Mediterranean - U.S. general
04.12.2024 16:40

The loss of military bases in Syria in the event of the overthrow of the Bashar Assad regime would deprive Vladimir Putin of the ability to influence the situation in the Mediterranean.

This opinion was expressed by the former commander of the U.S. Army European Command, General Mark Hertling (Ret.), who spoke with CNN, reports Ukrinform.

Hertling recalled that there are Russian naval and air bases in Syria.

"Both of those bases give him (Putin - ed.) access to the Mediterranean. Once he loses that because of a potential overthrow of Assad, he has lost capability to influence the Mediterranean," the former commander said.

He stressed that Russia has also lost some of its influence in the Black Sea based on the ongoing war with Ukraine, and Russian naval bases in the Baltics, in Kaliningrad, are also under threat.

“You’re seeing Putin being really tossed into a corner. These bases are all critical to their military presence in these areas, and the increased rebel activity in northern Syria and the Turkish incursions have heightened concerns about the Russian supply routes even into the area,” Hertling stressed.

The general added that the Russians are facing economic problems and reduced assistance from allies.

“As calm as Putin and his spokesman may appear to be, they don’t reason to feel very good about what is going on,” Hertling believes.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Russia is evacuating naval forces from its base in the Syrian city of Tartus. This may indicate that the Kremlin has no intention of sending significant reinforcements to support the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the short term.

Why does Russia support the Assad regime? What are Russia’s interests to fight in Syria and defend the Assad regime?
Elena Gold

Russia supported the Assad’s regime in 2010s in exchange to gaining a foothold in the Middle East. Russian bases in Syria are essential to Russia’s operations in Africa, and Putin is after Africa for its diamonds and gold, which help Russia to circumvent western sanctions.

However, Russia’s war in Ukraine resulted in the majority of Russian forces stationed in Syria being moved to Donbas. When the Syrian rebels whom Russians were fighting in 2020 attacked last week, the Russian troops in Syria collapsed.

Assad’s own forces collapsed as well.

The 2-million city of Aleppo was taken by rebels in just 48 hours.

Since then, the rebels kept advancing.

It’s now reported that Assad’s forces lost control of Hama, Syria's 4th-largest city, less than 24 hours after rebels entered the city.

Developing that victory, the rebels advanced 40 km south from Hama, taking Talbiseh — and have already reached the city of Homs.

This means, the rebels are less than 25 km from cutting off the coast of Syria (with Russia’s bases in port of Tartus and Latakia) from the capital Damascus.

The Assad’s regime is now in mortal peril.

Assad’s chief propagandist, Shadi Helwa, was reportedly spotted on a Flydubai flight to Dubai, as he was fleeing the country.

Russian military blogger ‘Fighterbomber’ calls the situation in Syria “critical”: Russian military bases and airfields cannot be protected from shelling and drone strikes, evacuation is basically impossible — everything will be left except some documents and personnel.

There is no other place where Russia can keep its planes or ships. The Russian ships left Tartus several days ago, while Russian official military speakers stated that “there were planned exercises”, that’s why the ships left.

The blogger states that Russian troops should try to hold the bases no matter what, “even if we have to lose all other territory.” In other words, Assad can sort himself out — Russians only care for their own stuff on their bases.

Yesterday, the highway to Tartus was overflowing with Russian military and loyalists fleeing from the city of Homs.

Meanwhile, in Aleppo, former soldiers of the Assad regime, the police and other security forces are lining up in huge numbers to register with the Syrian Salvation Government (rebel state) and take advantage of the amnesty to join the new authorities.

The capture of Hama by rebel forces can be only described as groundbreaking. In 24 hours, the frontline got pushed southward by over 30 km — that’s the distance that took Russians a whole year to cover in Donbas, Ukraine, and Russians lost 200,000 troops doing that.

That’s what a collapse of a frontline really looks like.

The actors of the Assad’s regime are now at the stage where all of them are thinking and planning exit strategies, but the window is fast closing.

If the rebels are continuing with the speed like this, then they could be in Damascus before January 1, 2025 — and then true "realities on the ground" will determine Syria's future.

Dec 8, 2024 - ISW Press

ISW has collected strong indicators that Russia has been setting conditions to evacuate its military assets from Syria and that Russian military basing is not secure. Satellite imagery collected on December 7 shows three Il-76 and one An-124 military transport aircraft at Russia's Khmeimim Air Base, possibly in order to evacuate limited amounts of Russian military assets from the country.[12] The Kremlin would likely need to conduct a substantial number of airlift sorties to properly evacuate Syria. Geolocated footage published on December 6 showed Russian forces transporting S-300 or S-400 and Tor-M1 air defense systems near Baniyas along the M1 Lakatia-Tartus highway, possibly as part of a tactical redeployment or for evacuation out of Syria.[13] A Russian source claimed on December 8 that Russian forces "are leaving Syria completely" and withdrawing from Khmeimim Air Base and the Port of Tartus.[14] Russian milbloggers, including a servicemember in the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), claimed that some Russian forces withdrew to Latakia and Tartus governorates a few days ago and are leaving from the Port of Tartus and Khmeimim Air Base but that at least one group of Russian personnel were encircled in an unspecified area of Syria and awaiting help or a negotiated exit corridor, indicating that Russian forces abandoned tactical positions beyond the main Russian bases at the port in Tartus and Khmeimim Air Base.[15] A Kremlin-affiliated Russian milblogger claimed on December 8 that Russian operational groups withdrew from Deir ez Zor and the Kuweires Air Base east of Aleppo City and that the status of Russian forces operating near the oil fields near Palmyra remains unclear.[16] Ukraine's Main Military Intelligence Directorate [GUR] stated on December 8 that Russia's Admiral Grigorovich Grigorovich-class frigate and Engineer Trubin cargo ship left the Port of Tartus and that Russian forces are evacuating weapons from Khmeimim Air Base by air.[17] A Russian milblogger claimed that Turkey is allowing Russia to fly through Turkish airspace to evacuate Russian military assets from Syria.[18] It is unclear whether Russia will conduct withdrawals and evacuations from Syria following the TASS reporting on the evening of December 8 that Russia had secured guarantees for Russia's military bases from Syrian opposition leaders. Even if Russia maintains some or all of its bases in Syria, it is a major geopolitical loss for Moscow, as Russia’s continued basing in Syria will be at the mercy of Syrian opposition groups that the Kremlin previously used to call terrorists.
The loss of Russian bases in Syria will have major implications for Russia’s global military footprint and ability to operate in Africa.
Russia has leveraged its Tartus naval base to project power in the Mediterranean Sea, threaten NATO's southern flank, and link its Black Sea assets to the Mediterranean Sea.[19] The loss of Russian bases in Syria will likely disrupt Russian logistics, resupply efforts, and Africa Corps rotations, particularly weakening Russia’s operations and power projection in Libya and sub-Saharan Africa. Russia could seek to leverage its presence in Libya or Sudan as alternatives, but the lack of formal agreements with these countries and insufficient infrastructure makes them inadequate substitutes. The collapse of Assad's regime and Russia’s inability to preserve the regime will also damage Russia’s global image as a reliable ally, threatening its influence with African autocrats whom Russia seeks to support and its broader geopolitical objective to posture as a global superpower.

Russian ultranationalist milbloggers – many of whom fought in or covered the Syrian war – are upset about the fall of the Assad regime, criticizing it as yet another failure of Russian foreign policy to exert and maintain influence in areas of strategic importance. The Russian ultranationalist community broadly criticized the Assad regime for becoming complacent in recent years by allowing its military to degrade and rely on other countries, including Russia and Iran, to provide the Assad regime with defensive capabilities.[20] The milbloggers largely focused on the impact the regime's collapse has on Russia, however, with some describing the fall of the Assad regime as a significant Russian foreign policy failure as Russia did not consistently work to increase Russian influence in the region or push the Assad regime to conduct governmental reforms under the Kremlin's direction.[21] Some milbloggers criticized the Kremlin for not realizing that Assad's military was degraded and that the opposition groups in Syria would likely someday renew offensive operations to exploit Russia's "mistakes" in Syria, with one milblogger noting that Assad's two major allies, Russia and Iran, are currently focusing on the wars in Ukraine and Israel and Lebanon, respectively.[22] One milblogger claimed that many Russian independent analysts and military correspondents had been warning about this possible course of action for years and reiterated longstanding ultranationalist complaints about the lack of a meaningful civil society in Russia to help avoid significant foreign policy failures.[23] A Kremlin-affiliated milblogger bemoaned the impact on Russia's global image, claiming that Russia's reputation is now entirely dependent on the outcome of its war in Ukraine, which is "more important [to Russia] than anything now."[24]

The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced on December 7 an additional military aid package for Ukraine worth $988 million.[25] The package includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) ammunition; equipment and spare parts for artillery systems, tanks, and armored vehicles; and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The US military aid package and continued Western support to Ukraine will help Ukrainian forces sustain the current tempo of operations across the theater of war which is destroying Russian combat power and degrading Russia’s economy at a rate Russia cannot afford to sustain across the long term.

Russian authorities detained alleged terrorists in the Republic of Dagestan on December 7 amid growing Russian milblogger claims that the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al Assad's regime in Syria will foster terrorism in Russia. Russian media reported on December 7 that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) detained 12 members of an alleged terrorist cell group in the Republic of Dagestan who were reportedly planning a major terrorist attack in an unspecified location in Russia.[26] Russian authorities reportedly seized two improvised explosive devices and over one ton of ammonium nitrate, weapons, and ammunition.[27] These arrests notably follow a test of the Russian sovereign internet on December 7, which prevented users in the Republic of Dagestan from accessing foreign websites and messaging services, including Telegram and WhatsApp.[28] The arrests also come amid Russian milblogger reactions to recent events in Syria claiming that the fall of the Assad regime will serve to inspire and export terrorism globally, including to Russia.[29] A Russian milblogger claimed that this particular terrorist group in Dagestan was likely inspired by the situation in Syria, cautioning that terrorism recruitment may increase in the North Caucasus, particularly among Central Asian migrants.[30] ISW assesses that Russian authorities continue to grapple with the need to foster domestic stability and growing anti-migrant ultranationalist sentiments in Russia while relying on migrants to address Russia’s labor shortages.[31]

Will Putin suffer the same fate as Assad?

Assad became already the 2nd runaway president whom citizens deposed for brutality and abuse — in 2014, Ukrainian president Victor Yanukovich escaped to Russia seeking refuge from angry citizen mobs.

Of course, the Russian mafia boss with the penchant for propping world’s worst dictators, Vladimir Putin, claims that the reason why citizens wanted to depose their corrupt leaders was “because the CIA paid them” — and not because people just had enough.

It’s quite ironic that Assad, who forced 6 million of Syrians to leave the country, is now officially “a Syrian refugee” — Russia granted him asylum “for humanitarian reasons.”

Would Putin suffer the same fate as Assad?
The speed with which Assad’s military collapsed in just 10 days was reminiscent of what was happening in Russia on June 24, 2023, when “Wagner” troops under command of Yevgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin were rushing towards Moscow.

No one stood in their way — if Prigozhin didn’t chicken out and halt his march mere 2-hour drive from Moscow, Putin’s regime would have crumbled just as spectacular as Assad’s.

No one tried to defend Putin — even his top propagandists suddenly shut up and didn’t support him.

These were some unforgettable 14 hours.

Putin’s regime was miraculously saved by Prigozhin’s cowardice and foolishness — the ‘Wagner’ boss chose to believe trapped Putin.

Which was nonsensically moronic.

Prigozhin could have become a new Russia’s national hero — instead, he ended up blown up in a private jet in the sky over Russia exactly 2 months later.

That’s what Putin does to people who got him cornered — but decided, for whatever reason, not to finish him in a moment of his ultimate weakness. Putin is a revengeful psychopath incapable of forgiveness or compassion.

That’s a lesson to learn for those who might think it could be a good idea to “allow Putin to save his face” — or think that Putin’s promises could be trusted.

If Prigozhin didn’t stop, Putin would have nowhere to run. There is no place in the world where Putin could feel safe.

This means, when cornered, Putin will promise absolutely anything, will agree to any conditions. Which he never intends to abide by — and will break in the most cruel fashion at the earliest opportunity.

That’s the training he got — first, from his mafia boss judo trainer as a kid, and then, from the KGB school — you can say anything that lets you get what you want. And you never have to deliver on your promises.

Putin only can be stopped by force.
There is no other way.

Will Putin stop at Ukraine? What country will he invade next?

Elena Gold

Putin told 140 millions of Russians today at the “direct line” press conference that he invaded Ukraine out of boredom.

"When everything is quiet, stable, measured – we are bored. It’s stagnation. We want some action,” Putin announced, giggling. (Video in the comments below.)

This giggling when talking about things that caused deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and destruction of whole cities, made millions of people to flee their homes, left hundreds of thousands of people with no legs or arms, is a sure sign of a psychopath.

Putin is so removed from reality and he was in such euphoria speaking to millions of his subjects, he spilled it out as it is.

“And when the action starts – we are scared,” giggled Putin. So, people terrified of destruction and death they cause, terrified watching their comrades dying, terrified to die in excruciating pain — for Putin it’s “scared”. Putin doesn’t want people to be scared of bullets flying next to their heads.

Putin can’t comprehend that.

He is quite enjoying it.

It makes him feel powerful, makes him feel important.

People kept speculating that Russia invaded Ukraine because of NATO, or because of “rights of Russian speakers”, or because of minerals, or because of the gas pipeline to Europe — and I kept saying that the decision to invade Ukraine was made by 1 man — Vladimir Putin, and he did it for personal glory, because stealing money and building palaces wasn’t satisfying enough for him anymore.

Today, Putin confessed that he did it out of boredom.

In his speech, Putin also proposed a duel (!) over Kyiv, to perform a "technological experiment": Western allies should pick a location in Kyiv (a multimillion city) to protect with Western air defense, and Russia will attack it with "Oreshnik" ballistic missile. And "let's see what happens".

That’s what a leader of a nuclear state says to his people. He’s not just a halfwit imbecile himself — he’s talking to the Russian nation like they are halfwit imbeciles.

That’s what happens to Putin when he deviates from a prewritten speech crafted by political technologists — he talks bunkum.

He fully believes he’s fighting America in Ukraine. It’s not Ukrainians he’s trying to hurt — it’s Americans. Ukrainians should just stop being silly and come back home to mommy Russia.

Putin isn’t a normal, reasonable head of state one could negotiate with. Putin is a delirious maniac who just enjoys killing people and terrorizing the world.

And that’s why Putin needs to be resolutely defeated in Ukraine.

So that Russia is unable to even attempt to invade anybody else.

Will Donald Trump succeed to stop the Russia-Ukraine war in 2025?

Elena Gold

Not only Donald Trump said he was going to stop the Russia-Ukraine war in 2025 — the sultan of Osman Empire is saying the same thing.

Turkish President Erdogan released a video message for the New Year’s Eve, in which he said that ending the war in Ukraine is a priority for Istanbul in 2025.

Erdogan also was consistently saying that Crimea is Ukraine.

After Turkey’s success in Syria and the fall of the Assad regime, Erdogan is certainly a major influence on developments in the region.

It was also Turkey that backed Azerbaijan in returning the territory of Nagorny Karabakh, kicking out Russian troops that were stationed there.
Putin is also having trouble with his puppet regimes in Russia-occupied Abkhazia and Tbilisi (Georgia).

Armenian president Pashinyan openly snubs Russia-centered economic and military alliances of post-USSR countries, refusing to participate in meetings of the military bloc SCTO and only attending sessions of the Customs Union by a video link.

The U.S. is a major military and economic power, but certainly not the only mighty power in the region that’s capable of creating actions leading to shifts in political landscape.

Trump’s decisive role in ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine could be to provide the full range of western weapons to Ukraine and allowing to hit juicy targets in Russia.

But with key members of Trump’s crew — his VP Vance and his co-president Musk — complaining about the aid to Ukraine and even mocking the U.S. efforts to support the nation fighting for its survival, Ukraine and Europe had to design a plan what to do if the U.S. indeed halts assistance, as Trump stated he might do — if Ukraine doesn’t agree on his plan.

So, Trump’s ability to end the war in Ukraine is based not on his threats to cut the U.S. aid, but rather on providing more of it.

If Trump chooses to side with Putin and cut aid to Ukraine, then the war will last longer — possibly, into 2026–2027.

To end the war in 2025, Trump would need to go for the throat. Putin’s throat.

Why are Ukraine doing so brilliantly well against Russia?
Ecom SEO Strategist

The people who make decisions in Russia (Putin, Patrushev, Bortnikov, Kovalchuk) are 70 years old.

They think in terms of the vertical of power, hierarchy, and industrial society.

Putin, Patrushev, Kovalchuk, Bortnikov – the horde of 70-year-olds stuck in the past.

Ukraine’s president Zelensky is a former producer who created the largest content factory in the Russian-speaking space, Kvartal-95.

He and his team are young, they think in terms of horizontal connections, creative initiative and the knowledge society.

Team Zelensky is young and looks into the future.

Putinoids think the past determines the present.

But it is the future that determines the present - what future you dream up, that’s what you live.

An average Russian male is stuck in the past: You meet him and he starts telling stories about his army service, when he was 18, and he’s 55 years old. Nothing else notable happened in his life since then.

Russia started dying about 10 years ago.

You can see it in Russian movies: Russians began to make films about the last war - not about the present, not about the future.

They don’t call the last war WWII, they call it, “The great patriotic war” and for them it started in 1941 and ended in 1945. An average Russian doesn’t know – and doesn’t want to know – about Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 1939 and how Hitler and Stalin were occupying Poland and Europe one country after the other, at the same time.

Selective historical memory – the chronic disease of putinism.

You can’t talk about the USSR occupying Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia.
You can’t talk about Finnish war of 1939–1940.
You can’t talk about USSR’s war crimes in WWII.
You can’t talk bad about Stalin, about repressions that affected millions of Russians.
You can't talk about Khrushchev.
You can't talk about the 1990s.

Stuck in the past, with no future – and even the past is fake, it’s edited, it’s a forged simulation. Putin is driving Russia into a non-existing oblivion.

Life will always win over death. It’s the law of nature.

Ukraine Must Join NATO: The Surest Way to Deter Russian Aggression
13.01.2025 15:20

When Vladimir Putin unleashed his forces on Ukraine in 2014 and then again in 2022, the Kremlin insisted it was acting to stave off an existential threat: NATO expansion. In truth, NATO is, and always has been, a defensive alliance—established in 1949 to contain the Soviet Union and, later, to deter potential aggression from the Russian Federation.

Putin’s narrative that Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership threatened Russia amounts to little more than a shrewd tactic to justify seizing a strategic prize he has coveted for years.

Consider the straightforward reality: If NATO truly posed a mortal danger to Russia’s borders, we would see similar aggression aimed at Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, or Poland—all NATO countries that directly border Russia. These neighbors are significantly closer to Moscow and St. Petersburg than Ukraine is- hundreds of kilometers away vs thousands.

Yet Putin chose to invade Ukraine, which he knows is rich in mineral resources, industrial capacity, and strategic Black Sea access. His pretext is weak. The blatant land grab is about restoring Moscow’s dominance over a former Soviet republic, not about fear of NATO tanks rolling across the Russian steppe.

One key reason for dismissing Putin’s “NATO threat” talk is that it drags negotiations into an impossible loop. The more Western leaders humor that false premise, the more it looks like they concede that Russia’s invasion was partly justified. Diplomats who repeatedly reference “Russia’s legitimate security concerns” end up granting a propaganda victory to the Kremlin. They wind up debating a scenario that never existed—namely, that Ukraine’s mere intention to join a defensive alliance warrants a full-scale assault. Far from signifying strength, this approach suggests timidity, because it fails to call out Putin’s aggression for what it is: an attempt to conquer territory he considers rightfully his.

It is no secret that Putin thrives on perceived weakness. In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, the international response was muted at best. Washington dithered under President Obama, offering sanctions that were more symbolic than biting. The conflict in eastern Ukraine simmered without a decisive Western response. Further, the chaotic U.S. pullout from Afghanistan in 2021 might have emboldened Putin, convincing him that America was unwilling to engage in another overseas fight. But these failures in Western policy do not explain away Russia’s invasion; they reveal Putin’s opportunistic streak. Whenever he sees an opening—Georgia in 2008, Syria in 2015—he exploits it. Ukraine is simply the biggest prize yet.

To understand why Ukraine’s NATO aspirations are legitimate, look no further than the promises Russia made in 1994. By signing the Budapest Memorandum, Moscow pledged to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders in exchange for Kyiv relinquishing more than 1,700 nuclear warheads. That was the largest voluntary disarmament in history, undertaken in good faith. Yet less than two decades later, Russia tore up those commitments by seizing Crimea and fueling conflict in the Donbas. If any nation has earned the right to seek a defensive guarantee, it is Ukraine, whose territorial integrity Russia was explicitly bound to protect.

For 25 years, Putin has tried every conceivable method—political puppets, assassinations, misinformation, and soft power—to yoke Ukraine permanently to the Kremlin’s orbit. He has always claimed, at least publicly, that this was out of concern for Russia’s national security. But no one could seriously believe that Ukraine, a nation without nuclear weapons and without treaty obligations compelling NATO to defend it, posed any meaningful danger to the largest country on Earth. Russia borders 14 countries, including six NATO members, but has singled out Ukraine as uniquely threatening. Why? Because as soon as Ukraine cements formal ties with the West, Moscow’s window to subdue it—or to meddle via proxy governments—closes.

The notion that Ukraine would ever invade Russia and drag NATO along with it is farcical. By definition, NATO membership demands a purely defensive posture; any member state that launches an offensive war on its own is at risk of losing the very security guarantees it joined to obtain. To put it simply: if Ukraine—now or in the future—initiated an unprovoked attack on Russia, Ukraine would be violating NATO’s fundamental principle of collective self-defense. It would face expulsion and isolation. No Ukrainian leader would embark on such a suicidal course. Thus, ironically, granting Ukraine NATO membership would actually bolster Russia’s security, because it would end the possibility of an open-ended conflict on Russia’s western flank.

What is happening to Ukraine is less about Russian “fear” than it is about territorial ambition. The real story is that Ukraine was one of the most vital republics in the Soviet Union, a hub of agricultural and industrial might, brimming with human talent, and offering direct access to warm-water ports. When Ukrainians turned westward in 2014, toppled their corrupt, pro-Russian president, and embraced democracy—even at great personal risk—Putin recognized a threat to his imperial worldview. He invaded, first covertly and then openly, to snap Ukraine back into the Russian fold. Finland and Sweden, on the other hand, never sat inside Moscow’s empire, never posed an easy conquest, and faced no immediate invasion from Russia when they decided to join NATO.

If this all sounds reminiscent of a mafia boss exploiting the one business on the block without security, it is. Imagine five banks in a neighborhood. Four install high-end security systems, while the fifth does not. The local crime boss targets that vulnerable bank and threatens to rob it if it tries to upgrade its defenses—claiming he feels “threatened” by the installation of better alarms. Such logic is nonsensical. The mafia is not truly afraid of security cameras; it simply prefers to rob the unprotected. Russia’s approach in Ukraine is hardly different: it prefers weak neighbors that can be dominated and pillaged with minimal cost.

Ultimately, the best path to safeguard Ukraine—and paradoxically, to reduce tensions with Russia—is for NATO to incorporate Ukraine under its umbrella. A fully integrated Ukraine, bound by the alliance’s rules and forced to uphold its collective defense ethos, cannot carry out an offensive war against Russia. The irony is undeniable: if Putin truly wants to stop any future Ukrainian aggression, NATO membership would guarantee exactly that. But Putin’s real aim is domination, not security, which is why he fights to keep Ukraine out.

Ukraine’s membership would close off the last plausible route for the Kremlin to keep meddling in its neighbor’s affairs. It would demonstrate to dictators worldwide that aggression does not pay, and it would uphold the principle that sovereign nations have the right to chart their own destinies without fear of invasion. Let us finally dispense with the myth that NATO expansion caused Russia’s invasion. Vladimir Putin wanted Ukraine under his control—and only a robust collective defense arrangement can prevent that from happening again.

Zelensky: Without Ukraine, Europe will be totally occupied

Today, the Ukrainian army has 110 combat brigades, the Russian army has 220, and there are currently about 82 combat brigades in Europe. Therefore, without Ukraine, Europe will be totally occupied.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said this in an interview with The Guardian, Ukrinform reports.

“Today, the Ukrainian army consists of 110 combat brigades. This is a lot. Russia has 220 [brigades], and they will be approaching 250 in 2025. That is, their army is twice as large. The European combat component, taking into account the American component that is present there, is about 82 combat brigades,” Zelensky said.

He emphasized that today the Ukrainian army, which has 110 brigades, is holding back the army, which has 220 brigades, but it is one to two.

“If you want to attack, you need your army to be at least one to three. Then there will be an effective offensive and advancement. Without Ukraine, you will realize that Russia has one to three in relation to Europe. And it is very clear what is happening. That is, without Ukraine, Europe will be occupied. Totally occupied. “By the Russians. If they want to. And I believe that they have no other idea in their minds. They will want it,” the President emphasized.

As Ukrinform reported, earlier in an interview with the British broadcaster ITV News, Volodymyr Zelensky said that total sanctions against Russia and strong security guarantees for Ukraine are needed to end the war quickly.

Zelensky: No talks with Russia, they must be stopped or they’ll push forward

President Volodymyr Zelensky called on European and American partners not to negotiate with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin but to take care of their own security.

The Head of State said this in an interview with The Guardian, Ukrinform reports.

“Putin has never asked for anything - he simply invaded our territory. So why should people on whose continent there is a war today ask him? Maybe we should just stop these infantile conversations? Our security guarantees are ours. Europe needs to defend itself because it is Europe. And the 'Russians' are the 'Russians'. They need to be put in their place,” Zelensky said.

He added that Ukrainians have great confidence in their army.

“If there is an opportunity to seriously increase our army, and we have the weapons and finances for this, we can live without another contingent, but I repeat - this is the defense of Europe. The fact that their contingent can be with us, at sea or on land, means that they will keep the defense. Because Putin will go to their countries after us. So they need it,” the President emphasized.

As Ukrinform reported, during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the deployment of a peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine could be only a segment of real security guarantees.
