Slavery was not limited to blacks, although mostly involved colored people because they already were at disadvantage. There were fair colored slaves. Jews were slaves under pharos. There were Hebrew slaves. There is modern day slavery. You work for rich companies in no better condition than slavery.
Slavery was a source of wealth for the powerful at some point. Whoever weak, conquered was likely to be sold as slave too to earn wealth. West Africans were most involved in slave trade. They would exploit a clan with kings. They would fight in a war and the one beaten could be enslaved or sold to white merchants as a slave. Some of the slaves might have been kings and descendants of kings beaten in a war.

Not trying to legitimize slavery here. But there is nothing special about it. Everybody did it on the weak and beaten, so nothing special.
