48 Ethiopians Dead and 111 Missing in Tragic Incident off Djibouti Coast

Obock, 2 October –– At least 48 people have tragically died and 111 still missing after they were forced off their vessel in open sea by smugglers. The incident that occurred off the coast of Obock, near Godoria involving two boats transporting migrants returning from Yemen.

According to survivors, the first boat carried 100 migrants while the second had 210 on board all returning to Djibouti from Yemen. Migrants were forced by the Yemenite boat operators to disembark in the open sea and swim. One woman drowned, but her 4-month-old infant survived along with 98 others from the first boat.

The International Organization for Migration in Djibouti is supporting state emergency services in search and rescue operations for missing persons. So far, 55 people have been rescued and are receiving medical and psychosocial support. Ongoing search and rescue operations are underway by the Djiboutian Coast Guard to locate the missing migrants.

The Djibouti Government is providing humanitarian assistance and protection interventions including medical assistance, mental health and psychosocial support and safe shelter to the survivors.

Ethiopia: Mass arbitrary detentions in Amhara region deepen erosion of rule of law

Responding to reports of the ongoing arbitrary detention of hundreds of people, including members of the academic community, in major towns across Ethiopia’s Amhara region since 28 September 2024, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Tigere Chagutah, said:

“The Ethiopian army and police’s ongoing campaign of arbitrary mass detentions in Amhara region is yet more evidence of the government’s total disregard for the rule of law. Eyewitnesses have stated that authorities came with a “list” and failed to obtain arrest and search warrants before detaining hundreds of civilians across the region. Those detained have largely not been brought before a court of law within 48 hours, as required by the country’s national laws and constitution.”

The Ethiopian army and police’s ongoing campaign of arbitrary mass detentions in Amhara region is yet more evidence of the government’s total disregard for the rule of law.

“Ethiopian authorities must immediately end these arbitrary arrests, press charges against those detained for internationally recognized crimes and follow due process, or release them without further delay. It is time for the authorities to stop using arbitrary detention as a tool of repression”.

Background

In recent months, Amnesty International has documented harassment, intimidation, and relentless attacks on journalists and human rights defenders by Ethiopian authorities, driving many into exile. This exodus of critical voices has severely diminished reporting and documentation of ongoing human rights violations, particularly in conflict-affected areas like the Amhara region.

These latest arbitrary arrests of academics and civil servants risk further eroding freedom of expression. Reports indicate that members of the academic community at federal universities in the Amhara region are among those arrested. Witnesses also told Amnesty International that some arrests were made late at night, including by members of the army.

War-torn Ethiopia : 13 farmers killed in fresh drone strike in Gojjam

At least 13 farmers are reportedly killed in a fresh drone attack in Gojjam. It occurred on Tuesday in the morning in Enarje Enawga district, Felege Berhan town, according to an Ethiopian Media Services(EMS) report.

The target of the attack was Gubae Mariam Elementary school. According to the source, there were five rounds of strikes.

Fano Yohannes Alemayehu, deputy public relation of Gojjam Fano forces, has confirmed the attack to EMS. He added that one of the victims was a fano member who was in the area for work.

20 dead in South West Ethiopia Peoples region

Last week, Majangir ethnic militias attacked and reportedly killed at least 20 civilians in Shekibido kebele in Andracha woreda in Sheka woreda, South West Ethiopia Peoples region. According to local residents, the perpetrators crossed into Sheka zone from the neighboring Majang zone of Gambela region, attacking farmers and civil servants. The head of the Shekibido kebele was among those killed. Federal police have taken control of the area to prevent additional attacks.
