It does not matter who started with what; charcoal trade, listro or small shop but at the end of the day what matters is where that person makes it in life.
I remember a gurage student who was leading in grades the whole high school sections while working as listro and helping himself out because he was from under previleged family. Today that person is a world class thinker.
It is a pity our northern brothers sisters did not manage to leave behind their feudal behavior, have filthy mouth and frozen in time. No progress in nothing. Society has changed but they still think backward except some bright ones. They advance to higher institution, they travel the whole world but they don’t change even after seeing what the other world does for living and that is the concern of nobody except the person who does it. In civilized world you don’t ask what a person does for living, what wears and what that person eats which is no body’s business except the person.
Our southerner fellow countrymen including Oromos and Tigray in the north are stuck in ethnic quagmire with no progress to nuclear family.Consaguinity and ethnicity precedes every affair.
That is the predicament of the whole Africa, the Arabs and our black society. We are not able to think bigger things like science, advances, creativity and innovations. We keep fighting and name calling on trivial things.

In Addis Abeba, there is the one and only private heart surgery hospital about 15 0r 20 years old. The owner is Gurage heart surgeon. Employees a number of cardiac Surgeons. He treats poor patients free.

Gurage intellectuals and civil servants never advertise their ethnicity. A lot of the famous generals during Haile Selassie, we didn't even know they were Gurages. In the 1960's and 1970s, Alemaya university lecturers were soooo many Gurages it used to be called Gurage university. Even today the educational system is packed with Gurage educators. There are so many Gurage engineers, I stopped counting. The Gurage Dr. Seme Debela was key intellect in the creation of Ethiopian academy of Sciences. The Gurage Dr. Yirga Tesema is the rare intellect who did his Ph.D in Japan an expert on Charles Darwin and who translated the Origin of the Species into Amharic. If I am not mistaken, the famous Swedish brain surgeon Dr. Fikru is a Gurage. ብቻ ቤቱ ይቁጠራቸው!!

This thread is a very appropriate educational and informative response to foreigners, the starving poor Eritrean refugees and Somaliabi*ex who know nothing about Gurages except about the poor boys who do listro. They singled Gurages listros, but I met oromos, Amaras, Welaitas, Sidama, all do listros. Eritreans do listros in their town and cities. Europeans, Americans, South Americans do listros.
