Why is Ethiopia just entering 2017 and celebrating a New Year in September?
TEMI IWALAIYE

Are you wondering why Ethiopia is just entering a new year and it's 2017? Ethiopia was not colonised by the rest of the world, so it still maintains most of its culture and traditions.
Why is Ethiopia just entering 2017 and celebrating a New Year in September?
- Ethiopia celebrates its New Year, Enkutatash, which is based on the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar.
- The Ethiopian calendar is derived from the ancient Coptic and Julian calendars.
- The Ethiopian calendar has 12 months with an additional 13th month in leap years and New Year falls on Meskerem 1, around September 11 or 12 on the Gregorian calendar.

እንኳን የቋንቋ አዲስ አመት ሲሉ ያስቁኛል።
ቋንቋም ዘመን መለወጫ እንዳለው አላውቅም ነበር። The confused Skunnis often call it and celebrate it as "Geez New Year". The confused slave ascari Skunnis coined that word to not mention "Ethiopian".
Unfortunately the low self-esteem Tigrayans who are known to copy everything from Skunnis started to follow that naming style this year.

We celebrate both the Habesha Geeze year with Hoyahoye, Qidase, QeTema, Adey flower ... and the Gregorian year with fireworks, lights, Panatone and Christmas tree. EriTv has been celebrating this Habesha Geeze new year including today, see the news reader today, Sep 12.

The Circular Journey in Search of Eritrea: A “World Distance” that Never Was
Yosief Ghebrehiwet
What makes the revolutionary journey that Eritreans have embarked on in the past 50 years a March of Folly is that, after all the prohibitive human cost it required to reach the destination, it turned out to be a circular one that ends exactly at the very point where it all started – and that is, under best scenario. If not, the desperate attempt not go back to the starting point, by prolonging the ghedli detour indefinitely, will be the end of Eritrea as a nation. Already that quixotic fight against gravity has been the main cause for all the major disasters that has befallen Eritrea in the last five decades. And the latest attempt by Shaebia to do just that (as in the ghedli detour enforced in the National Service) is unraveling the nation at a dizzying pace, as it is being hollowed out demographically, militarily, educationally, economically and socially.

Even members of Hegdef are expressing their sorrow about it, there is nothing new about ጥር in our homeland. We can sense when the season is changing in መስከረም. Stop observing the Western New Year and start honoring our centuries-old tradition.

Victoria's Ethiopian community ushers in a new year with musical celebrations in Melbourne's west
By Ruth Brook

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in the heart of Footscray in Melbourne's west, Ethiopian music thrums down Nicholson Street.
Melbourne's Ethiopian community is celebrating the new year.(ABC News: Kyle Harley)
Aromas of frankincense and roasted coffee beans hang in the air, as a tight-knit community prepares to say goodbye to 2016.
You'd be forgiven for thinking this community was living in the past, but Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar, which falls almost eight years behind the globally-adopted Gregorian calendar.

On Ethiopian New Year, "Meskel Flower" Is a Love Letter to Our Culture
BY RUHAMA WOLLE
SEPTEMBER 11, 2024
ELIANEL CLINTON
Every September 11—as the rains retreat and the earth drinks its final drops—the golden petals of the Meskel flower are blooming across Ethiopia. They blanket the highlands in yellow brilliance, a living tapestry that signals the dawn of a new year: Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year. While the world waits for the cold grip of winter to mark the start of its calendar, Ethiopia steps into 2017, holding onto a unique timeline rooted in its own heritage. In a world hurtling toward 2025, Ethiopia stands anchored in its own rhythm, a subtle reminder that time moves differently here, steeped in the kind of history and culture that refuses to be rushed.

4 unique differences between the Ethiopian & Gregorian calendars
AMOS ROBI
11 September 2024 04:15 PM
While much of the world, including Kenya, is in the year 2024, Ethiopia celebrates the start of the year 2017 on September 11 or 12.
The Ethiopian calendar, also known as the Ge'ez calendar, is a unique system that reflects Ethiopia's rich cultural and historical heritage. Although it shares some similarities with the Gregorian calendar, it has distinct features that set it apart.
Overview of the Ethiopian calendar
The Ethiopian calendar is based on the ancient Coptic calendar, which has its roots in the ancient Egyptian calendar. It is used predominantly in Ethiopia and Eritrea and is a solar calendar, like the Gregorian calendar, but with notable differences.

Ignorant Ethiopians! When are you getting out of myth (Ethiopian Folktales)? The Ethiopian calendar has been adopted from the Coptic calendar of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and Coptic Catholic Church and its origin is the Julian calendar,

The Eris are celebrating Ethiopian New Year’s. They said they are celebrating religious calendar.
What a confused and demoralized society.
And why are they migrating in all directions like this. It is an exodus and looks like an evacuations from natural disasters.
I also don’t understand why their restaurants claimed to serve “Ethiopian & Eritrean cuisine”. You go through the menu and it is all Ethiopian food. They claimed Enjera is their traditional food. What? What happened to pasta?
They invite people to their home and feed Ethiopian food.
Eris are torturing themselves by trying to be who they are not.
