Federal Ethiopia is Transitional Solution Towards either Independent Oromia or Integrative Oropia

It seems that ethnic federation of Ethiopia is almost accepted as a compromise solution for the hitherto troubled Abyssinian empire dominated by Amaranet/Amarigna. It is not bad to transform the empire to such a union of free nations. But, the burning question yet to be answered is: how stable is such ethnic based federal union? Is such union really in the best strategic interest of the Oromo? Let’s discard the old idea that Oromia shall separate from Ethiopia. Oromia is the stem from which others (branches) like Amharia and Tigrai may separate, not the vice versa. Is it in the best interest of the Oromo to give such chance of separation for the peripheral regions like Somali, Amharia and Tigrai? I don’t think so. That is why I prefer to advocate Oropia (Oromumma led Ethiopia) with geo-federation, which is more stable than the ethnic federation. The Oromo better strive to foster stable Oropia and consequently dismantle ethnic federation. Particularly, the three big regions (Amharia, Somali and Oromia) need to be divided. I would like to recommend the division in to Welqayit, North Amara (Gondar), West Amara (Gojjam), South Amara (Shoa), East Amara (Lasta), North Somali (Isa), West Somali (Fiq), East Somali (Ogaden), South Somali (Garre), North Oromia (Wallo), West Oromia (Wallaga), South West Oromia (Ilu-Jimma), Central Oromia (Tullama), East Oromia (Hararge), South East Oromia (Arsi-Bale) and South Oromia (Guji-Borana). Having such regions as federal states of Oropia is the more stable solution we have to forge. If not such stable Oropia be established, then separation of others from Oromia is surely well programmed and the Oromo will be left with only smaller Oromia, instead of owning the bigger Oropia.

This article is based on the discussion among different political groups in the hitherto Abyssinian empire, which was ignited by one open letter written by Dr. Fikre Tolassa and directed to Dr. Bayan Asoba. The letter was containing a different, but relatively new, version of Amhara-Oromo “history”. It motivated us to think about the possible win-win solution for the hitherto conflict between elites of the two big nations of Oropia – the Amhara and the Oromo, so that they can find a common ground to cooperate against the currently ruling dictatorial regime. Because of the short opinion I forwarded as a response to Dr. Fikre’s open letter, I was asked by many readers per e-mail to elaborate a bit more about what I mean by “federal union as common home”. Thus, I try in this piece of essay. First of all, to make clear to my readers, I am not historian, geologist, politician, anthropologist or ethnologist to falsify or verify Dr. Fikre’s version of history. I am simple Oromo individual interested in Oromo cause and try to dig deep about the Oromo. Let me then try to describe the two interesting Oromo perspectives regarding our history as well as our destiny and look at the variety regarding their implication.
