Halaba resisted Menelik until 1893, while Hadiy and Gurage lost to Menelick in 1889.
Warrior tradition in their bloods. Trounced Hadiya in the 2000 for special wereda status so that they can govern themselves. They have never been weak enough to be raped.

They are one of the multi ethnic groups that formed the Sultanate of Hadiya..At one point in their history, they spoke a Gurage dialect. You would expect it to be one in the Gurage East group similar to Wulbarag, Berbere, Azernat, Silte, Welene.

The period in which Halaba made a language shift from Semitic to Highland East Cushitic not revealed to me yet.
