To do was keep Eritrea as a friend and not bite the hand that fed them when eplf helped the tplf consolidate their power there.
No one was a threat not the gallas and the Amhara no one neither of these groups are fighters but the Eritreans are . Amhara just want to dance in good military uniforms and gallas other then being barbaric aren’t much of a fighting folk
But because Shabia entertained galla Amhara opposition this led to the downfall of the agame and I think it was greed . They did something irrational taking the fight for Eritrea for what . It wasn’t for political gain but merely for sort of psychological validation from their northern counter part they wanted to proof they were independent in their way the border war could have been avoided and eventually they losing power could have been avoided
