Ethiopia would be better of and at peace by keep paying the small payments it makes to Djibuti, Somalia or Eritrea to ship in or ship out it's goods.
It will spend a lot more to have access to the sea and maintain it. In addition, it will expose it to expensive regional conflicts to have its own port on the Red Sea. In order to keep its peace, it will have a costly naval base with its own fully staffed sea men, war ships and naval college. Too expensive for a country of 90% subsistence farmers and meager manufacturing and mining economy.
Ethiopian enemies are not foreigners. Our enemies are unpopular, ill- or mal-conceived policies that lack grassroots interests as core principles. Pre-eminent identity politics at the expense of all the rest or in alliance with predators of similar creed are enemies of Ethiopia.
Access to Red Sea exposes Ethiopia to regional wars
