Currently Ethiopian is using the port of Djibouti for it's import and export all be it with qualms.
So what difference it makes if Ethiopia uses the port of assab as well?

Ethiopia is not looking for a port but ownership of a coastal land in another country, which literally means owning a portion of another country. Assab port is not in a no man's land but in Eritrea. The same goes for Somaliland, as it's in Somalia.

A few years ago, Somalia got too generous for Ethiopia and gave it 19% share in Berbera port, but Ethiopia failed to meet its basic obligations, and thus it has lost its stake. And since last January, Somalia has decided to never ever give 0.0001% to Ethiopia at any port in Somalia, including Berbera port.
