Turkey Signs Oil and Gas Exploration Deal with Somalia

Post by Somaliman » 07 Mar 2024, 14:25

The Turkish drilling ship Kanuni.

ISTANBUL, March 7 (Reuters) - Turkey signed an offshore oil and natural gas cooperation deal with Somalia on Thursday, the Turkish Energy Ministry said, further strengthening bilateral ties after agreeing a defence deal last month.

The energy ministry said the deal, which it described as an inter-governmental agreement, includes exploration, evaluation, development and production of oil in Somalia's land and sea blocks.

"With this agreement, we will carry out joint activities to bring the resources of Somalia to the Somali people. We aim to strengthen Turkey's presence in the Horn of Africa with new collaborations in the field of energy," Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on social media platform X.

"Oil and natural gas exploration offshore of Somalia, and it looks more like oil for now, will start very soon in the areas we have identified. We will maybe send our seismic (exploration) vessel there in the first phase," he said separately in a panel, without elaborating.

The deal includes transportation, distribution, refining, sales and services operations of oil and other products from land and sea projects, the ministry also said.

Congratulations to Somalia. Turkey has always stood by Somalia and history attests it.

As an Eritrean, I am jealous (of course not cynically minded), I wish the ruling higdef regime approaches Turkey or any other similar country and signs deals which the eri broad messes benefit from it.

Enough with badme this badme that.

I believe any Somali would agree that Eritrea would have to benefit from any oil produced in Somalia, not only by providing it with either free or very cheap oil, but also cash to boost its dire financial situation.

I totally agree that Afwerki should open up the country and connect with countries like Turkey. But we've to remember that Turkey, after all, is not immune to the American influence and recommendations on which country Turkey should on should not deal with. And if you play the tough guy as our Afwerki has done, the US and its western puppets isolate you and make you a praiah - and that's the price both Afwerki and Eritrea have been paying.

congrats for Somalians. However, what Somalians did, Eritrea can't do. Somalians have parliaments and all the necessary public mechanisms are present. Eritrea has none of those, not yet but to make a such deal, that involves sovereignty, you need public and parliament consultant. When I hear the Eritrean president says, Eritrea is not for sell, that what he is saying. I think, at least that is my take.
However, if you have the power for Assab to give it say to Russia, Italy, China, Iran or the USA, who will you give Assab to?

James Brown used to sing "This is a man's world". Lately, the world has become a world of the US. You disagree with the US, right or wrong, they shut all doors to you.

so far, you are right but don't undermine the power of China. the order of the world is changing. Besides, I think Eritreans will the last people to award their precious and strategic port to the US. The US has done all the evil things to the Eritreans. If they had done that, they would never suffer for the last 30 years. this is just my take.

Why are you reducing Eritrea to Assab port, in the first place! Eritrea is not just a port. It's like saying an elephant is ivory tusks. Eritrea has many natural resouces that are much more valuable than a fuc.king port.

To answer your question, even though I'm not Eritrean. Eritrea should not give or award, as you've put it, its Assab port to anyone.

You are missing my point. the likes of mining and other activities are business and currently there are China, Australia and other foreign companies are doing business but when you are involving part of your sovereignty, the likes of ports, you get my drift.

Of course Eritreans and Somalis respect each other. Eritrea has helped Somalia and Somalia is happy to return the favour via free or very cheap oil and gas. Huge investment and free cash to Eritrea. 8)

The Somalians are not as stupid as you are.

You want Ethiopia for yourself? Disarm and hand over the Afar land to the Afars.

It is over baby.
