From 1991 to 1998 -- The amount of port fees Ethiopian truck drivers were required to pay at the Eritrean Massawa and Assab ports: 10 Birr ($0.18¢ USD) per visit.

From 1998 to Present -- The amount of port fees Ethiopian truck drivers are required to pay at the Djibouti Port:
7000 Birr ($125 USD) per visit.

So why did the agame choose to spend $1.6 billion dollars a year using Djibouti's port services when they were only paying $2 million a year to Eritrea, which was $1,598,000,000 less? "ጌታ ሆይ እባክህ አንድ አይኔን አጥፋው" አለ ምቀኛው አጋሜ :P :P

Nothing the agame do makes sense to civilized people. Over the last 20 years they happily gulped down 1.6 billion gallons of poison expecting Eritreans to die. The oft-repeated myth which says, "if Ethiopia does not use Eritrean ports, Eritreans will suffer", has been repeatedly debunked. But some people love to repeat such myth because they don't want their illusions to be destroyed by the truth.

It is crazy stupid what the Ethiopian government did. I do believe Ethiopia will use port of Assab but that deal is dead and Abiy killed it.

Singapore did not become a thriving Global Hub for trade and commerce by providing port services to its landlocked neighbors, but rather by becoming a trans-shipment port connecting cargoes from their origin to the destination port, such as the transfer of cargo from one vessel to another while the goods are in transit.

Here is an example of trans-shipment for better understanding.

The place of origin of cargo is China while the final port destination is Athens, Greece. However, a direct vessel to carry goods to Athens is not available. Hence, goods will be loaded onto the Chinese vessel en route to Singapore, unloaded there and reloaded to the ship scheduled to Athens. In this case, Singapore is an intermediary halt, known as trans-shipment hub.
