The answer is a no-brainer. Gurage, as a collective, has failed to fight for freedom. This comes from the willful misreading or intentional misunderstanding of Ethiopian politics as well as an irresponsible negligence toward our ethnic group which is is likely face existential threats in the absence of a vanguard political party that would protects its rights and freedom in Ethiopia. We fail to learn from Amara, Oromo, Tigrey, Eritrea, Somali, etc and organize ourselves seek alliances. We condemn all the liberations as enemies of Ethiopian unity. Usually, we believe true Ethiopians are those who rule Ethiopia and we don't want to disappoint them by establishing Gurage political group that opposes the Ethiopian government. On the denial of the Gurage demand for the establishment of its autonomous region, as the EPRDF constitution provides, he has the support of all former and current Gurage Gov leaders who remain EPRDF loyalists and then switched to Abiy Ahmed's PP. By denying Gurage its constitutional rights, he knew he would still be safe. Compare these Gurage hodams with the leaders of Sidama who were members of the EPRDF. They wrote a letter to Abiy Ahmed warning him that if the Sidama demand for its own Region was not positively answered, Sidama would not be peaceful. In addition, he tested Gurage by arresting Gurage youth leaders, there were no protests to free them. They were not even visited in prison. Then massacred around 6 people protesting about water shortage with water collection jericans in their hands. No organized protests by youth, elders or faith leaders.
There is a poverty of political leadership, action and lack of knowledge of the natures changing Ethiopian govs. We don't go all the way to achieve a goal. We should be more organized, determined, creative/resourceful, unflinching, daring, committed and consistent.
