Is Somaliland Backtracking on the MoU? They are now saying they will lease only a naval port in return for recognition

Post by sesame » 26 Jan 2024, 03:53

They are now back-stabbing each other. Abiy was selling the MoU as ownership of a commercial and naval port. It seems like the Somaliland president belatedly understood that leasing a port to Ethiopia for recognition was not a fair bargain. Poor Abere, all that jubilation was for nothing!

And Ethiopia has retracted from its earlier claim that it'll recognise Somaliland. It has lately been saying that Ethiopia will only "give an In-depth assessment io Somaliland recognition" once it has secured its coastal land.

This is a memorandum of misunderstanding - and has no chance whatever to materialise.

They are now back-stabbing each other.
So true.

We say in Somali, those who agree with each other on falsehood and deception, will fight against each other when the truth finally comes to light.

Nope! In fact Somaliland is confirming that it has given 20 km coast line for half a century to Ethiopia. This is great news for Ethiopia but a shocking one for those attempting to landlock her. I regard this the first big move and every good things will follow. Success triggers success. What a loss for the envious lazy Arab league participants - which in fact this "league" itself is created to rival Ethiopia.

Abere,
Actually, this seems to be the original agreement and Somaliland is clarifying the public confusion. Here is why. Ethiopia has a previous port deal at Berbera and could not come with the money. It is still the case in that how can Ethiopia build a brand new port while it could not finance 19% Berbera with UAE? So, now Abiy has some how made a deal with UAE to remain with Berbera deal. For Somaliland, it does not make same to give Ethiopia a new port and create a competition against its own other port - Berbera. More over it does not make sense to have a commercial port and a Navy base at the same location.

The core issue in this whole drama was the issue of Ethiopian Navy base not leasing or renting a port to load and unload products. Ethiopia could have simply renegotiated a cheaper deal with Djoubti!!! In fact it seems that part of Somaliland's Navy base deal was that Ethiopia will shift its commercial use from Djibuti to Berbera.

For Ethiopia it is a great news that now we can in fact begin to imagine the rebirth of THE ETHIOPIA NAVY!

Rear Admiral Lij Iskinder Desta Damtew must be smiling down on this news.

Sure, you can imagine not only having a naval base on the Somali coast, but also, controlling the Indian Ocean, Asia, and the seven seas that the Indian Ocean is key to, as Alfred Mahan prophetically observed.

Go for it, imagine anything your little chicken-brain can figure out. It's totally free of charge. You don't even need to subscribe to anything to imagine whatever you fancy. But don't overindulge in it, as it might completely disconnect you from the reality.

I'm just saying.
