Do you think he had a choice if meles refused Eritrea to get their referendum. the EPLF would have fought the TPLF and it would have destroyed it and they would manage Ethiopia for a brief period of Time and sign the referendum themselves to them and from them Since they controlled Addis ababa. Or they might have led Ethiopia disentigrate and give the Somalis also a referendum. And then hand over the power to the gallas., That would have been amazing. The Tigrayans calculated well since they got the keys to the kingdom from their cousins. They couldnt care for a sea outlet and what not. They had the rest of Ethiopia and ruled it with an iron fist and they got even with their Amhara foes.

Dr. Zac you are inflating EPLF, you may have to get your facts on the respective roles of TPLF and EPLF in finishing Derg. You may have to also reflect what happened to EPLF when they backstabbed Meles in May 1998. PM Meles once again made a strategic error for not toppling Isaias , when he was in the position to do it. Isaias and TPLF had always love and hate relationship but Isaias used to come back and approach TPLF for help as TPLF became stronger and stronger. The bottom line is if war was to start post 1991 due to the port Issue , TPLF could have easily mobilized and patronized most Ethiopians and easily crush EPLF. For me PM Meles, Siyum Mesfin, & Sibhat Nega ( not The Tigray people or TPLF ) committed treason on Ethiopia. I am among the Tigrayans who were persecuted for opposing Meles' s policy on Eritrea and I have the moral ground to say Meles was wrong & committed treason.

Back in 1998 meles had consolidated his power in Ethiopia and he had control of the entire Ethiopian defense forces and was feeling confident hence the war and Meles had the upper hand . But what is the point he lost the political war badme was given to Eritrea by the courts of the international community.But my point is that the TPLF of sibhat and Meles and azeb mesfin haile. Had no issue with Eritrea independence first and second they had no choice even if they wanted to go against the EPLF interest how would it work there would be a stand off and a war , that would have destroyed both the EPLF and TPLF EPLF would have won the war though since they were stronger in 1991.
But maybe galla and amhara could have overthrown them and both the kebessa and tigrayans would have lost the war. Lucky for you Sibhat and Isias shared the pie between themselves.

When the Naval base is established it will be come National Asset of Ethiopia. That means Ethiopia will deploy her national defense assets ( Armed Force, Naval Force, Air Force) to defend her national assets. That is why U.S. or China and others do take measures against any threat around the world. If Somalia threatens Ethiopian asset, she will pay heavy price. Mogadishu will be flatten and Somalia's air defense knocked out. It is not joke, it is serious and have consequences for Somalia.

It was a lost opportunity ! The referendum was conducted in 1993 and Meles could had delayed that to two to three years until the constitutional order of Ethiopia was established, instead he was preaching on behalf of Eritrea. There are a number of causes that I give credit to PM Meles but in handling the Eritrean case , it was not only a failure but a treason. Of course the ungrateful Eritreans should have build a statue for PM Meles.
