The fact that Eritrea was colonised . The Italians captured much of the northern part of Eritrea from 1870 till 1880. Menelik back then was the King of shewa. Under Yohanes the Eritreans were resisting his rule

They would hate Menelik just like they hate Haile selassie and Mengistu they would insult him as a foreigner just another southerner imperial from Shewa. They would not embrace Shewan rule if they already declined to embrace Tigrayan rule.
