I don't get it! maybe someone can help me.
What is so important for Abiy and Ethiopia to have a Navy and Noval base? It is not about port that will serve and handles export and import but all this madness is about establishing Navy and Noval base. If it was about port, Eritrea was welling for Ethiopia to use the port almost for free. According to 2018 agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, they agreed to use Asseb port and the also agreed to fix all the roads between their respective borders. Accordingly, Eritrea finished building the roads of 71 K.M right until Bure while Ethiopia did nothing. This shows that Abiy never wanted a port that serve him cost-effective rather he wanted port ownership. The reason Abiy refused using Eritrean ports is nothing, but he wanted to have a Navy and Noval base and he knows Eritrea won't let him do that. According to the information I have, Djibouti charges Ethiopia 95 dollars per truck as a port fee while Eritrea and Ethiopia agreed to exchange with Nakfa and Birr. This was not only a noble idea but a win win situation. And any leader who cares about his people and country can't and wouldn't reject the deal with Eritrea. So, What I don't understand is what is the obsessions for Abiy to have a Navy and Noval base at all costs? Am i missing something?

Since he is in an open conflict with Egypt placing ur self at the red sea is strategic very strong with a naval forces u are better protecting or vital interest in the region its all about ur emphesizing strenght , the port issue is also a factor , but geopolitical and militristic strength is very important for abiye ahmed ali]

At least the following could be some plausible reasons
1) Abiy Ahmed being trapped in internal conflict- lost the battle and peoples support. Political stunt. At least this should not be a priority issue at this time.
2) Egypt being excessively restless out of insecurity and trying to station military force in a close distance to Ethiopia.
---- One can see the reaction from Egypt for fear of being get choked if indeed Somaliland gives naval base to anti-Egypt countries.

Okay but don't you think this could have solved by having a complete defense pact with Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia? The reason i said this is, establishing a Navy forces and Noval base from scratch at the moment where the country is under immense economic collapse, under peaceless ethnical conflict. What is having port when the country is about to explode? Maybe I am wrong but that how I see it. The first Abiy needs to do is built the economy, make a peaceful settlement to all conflict and then Abiy may worry about ports and Navy and Noval bases. I just think F-kd up priorities and wrong move. I think I tend to believe with above quoted statement of yours. If Egypt is an enemy, why make more enemy the likes of Eritrea, Somalia and possibly Djibouti?

Ethiopia is a client or servant or anchor or telalaki state and not having a navy is a handicap that it cannot serve its masters at full capacity…
1998 invaded Eritrea
2006 invaded Somalia
At the order of its masters via land Neighbors but having a navy will enable it to invade Yemen or Oman with a request from sponsoring superpower like the ferenjis or Arabs

It is true but all major countries are abandoning Abiy and the only country Abiy left with is UAE. And I don't see any value other than Abiy serving his boyfriend.Jaegol wrote: ↑03 Jan 2024, 13:07Ethiopia is a client or servant or anchor or telalaki state and not having a navy is a handicap that it cannot serve its masters at full capacity…

Re: I don't get it! maybe someone can help me.
Abiy is a severely wounded hyena. All his diplomatic blunders about access to the sea are designed to mobilize support from his people. This is what failed leaders always do, they create crisis to divert the attention of their people. Remember that access to the sea is a long-term project. Even if everything works out, it will be years before Ethiopia can build and use a port of its own. It may make Ethiopians feel good today but the reality of their current situation will not change an iota. Ethiopia's immediate problems are deep ethnic divisions, civil wars, economic collapse, inflation, starvation etc. Abiy has no idea of how to solve any of them. He flounders from one blunder into another. The best solution for Ethiopians is to get rid of this failed idiot before he takes them down further into the Abyss!

Defence pact with those countries won't add any strength to Ethiopia. All those countries have good relationship with Egypt they can take neutral positions when things heat up . But Ethiopia to have it's own NAVY Means it can hit back Egypt in case they attack the gerd. Egypt doesn't want Ethiopia to grow in any way. They too may call somaliland to halt Ethiopia. The number Ethiopia enemy is Egypt.
Re: I don't get it! maybe someone can help me.
So you think Ethiopia can fend off Egypt? Let's be frank here. the Ethiopian defense forces can't defeat neither TPLF nor FANO. If it wasn't for Eritreans, the Ethiopian defense forces had no chance the fight with TPLF. Even more disturbing, The Ethiopian forces can't fight and defeat FANO, nothing but a collection of untrained peasants? Make no mistake, FANO will prevail. So, Ethiopian defense forces have no chance facing up Egypt at this moment and years to come. I am not saying never but look what Abiy and Ethiopia is going on through.Jikaar wrote: ↑03 Jan 2024, 14:24ZEMEN wrote: ↑03 Jan 2024, 12:50Okay but don't you think this could have solved by having a complete defense pact with Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia? You can never defeat the peaple. Millions of Amhara peaple are supporting the fano terrorists. This is why they are still roaming. It's not easy to defeat rebels hiding among the peaple. The government should kill their leaders first. The rest may accept dialogue. And they should not be allowed to retain weaponsn. these fanatics are obstacle to the progress of society. I think in few years time Ethiopia can have Naval forces comparable to that of Egypt. But this can only happen if Ethiopia grows economically.
Re: I don't get it! maybe someone can help me.
Emperor Haile Selassie had to send his troops to Korea to earn foreign exchange and military assistance.
Menghistu had to become a bulwark for the communist bloc to earn foreign exchange and military assistance.
Meles Zenawi's first words when a low-ranking US government official named Jendayi Frazer gave him the orders to invade Somalia were: "The order is a god-sent," according to Wikileaks. And the agame Meles earned foreign exchange by sacrificing over 40,000 Ethiopian soldiers during his invasion and subsequent occupation of Somalia.
Cash-strapped Abiy also believes that having his own Navy on the Red Sea can earn him foreign exchange and military aid in the name of fighting Somali pirates.
A country known for its "ወንዞችዋ ያማሩ፣ ውሃዎችዋ የጠሩ፣ ዛፎችዋና ተራራዎችዋ የተዋቡ..." hasn't yet been able to use its vast natural resources to generate much needed revenue due to a Neo-colonial policy agenda that sees the country as a major source of troops that fight someone else's war in exchange for peanuts.

" You can never defeat the people. Millions of Amhara people are supporting the fano terrorists"
If the people are supporting FANO, then, FANO can't be defeated because FANO is supported by the people. Take it or leave but FANO will be victories. FANO has the main reason of wining a war. FANO has the cause and fighting a fight to survive.
