ERITREA: GATEWAY TO AFRICA

- Modern day Eritrea was one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity and Islam in the 4th century and 615 A.D, respectively.

- The early Paleochristian churches from Adulis are dated from the 5th-6th century AD, which is right after the advent of Christianity in the region (4th Century AD).

- The Al-Sahaba Mosque (مسجد الصحابة), is the oldest mosque built in Eritrea by the first Muslim Migrants to Massawa. The Mosque was built by the companions of Prophet Muhammed, who migrated from Mecca to present day Eritrea. That makes this Mosque, the first in Africa & probably in the world.

- The Geez language, aka African Latin, was introduced to Eritrea from South-Arabians. As they moved from the coastal areas of Eritrea; toward the highland, due to the hot weather, the language spread to other parts of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

- The oldest inscription of Ge’ez in Eritrea dates back to the 3rd to 4th Centuries. The Bible was translated into Ge’ez, between the 5th & 7th Centuries.

- The Periplus of the Erythrean Sea details a large number of items exported from India through Adulis such as long pepper, black pepper & transparent gems. The Christian Topography of Cosmas records, that emeralds that came from Beja were taken to India by merchants.

- Recent excavation at Assarca (aka the Black Assarca wreck), just beyond the mouth of Zula Bay in the Red Sea close to Adulis in Eritrea has produced evidence from a shipwreck, of maritime trade involving Byzantium, Aksum, Arabia and India in the 6-7th centuries CE.

- In around 220-589 A.D. the port city of Adulis had relations with ancient China where they used to import hippopotamus, turtle & ivory from Adulis.

- The archaeological findings of coins from ancient India in Eritrea and ancient texts proved the presence of Indian merchants at Adulis coast. Gupta Art (well-known in the Indian religion), dated to 4th- 6th century AD, was also discovered in Adulis.

- A pottery of China's Han Dynasty at Massawa Museum, shows a long and a good story of friendship and exchanges between ancient Eritrea & China.

- During the times of the Roman Empire (27 BC-476 AD), the importance of the port city of Adulis expanded & a number of trade exchanges were taking place b/n the countries of the Roman Empire and the port city Adulis.
