The year 1923

Post by Zmeselo » 17 Oct 2023, 02:48

When on 23 Sept.1923, Ethiopia applied for admission at the League of Nations, it submitted a map showing that it had defined international boundaries. Ethiopia also promised to end slavery and the slave trade, as a condition of joining the League of Nations.

On 8 April 1932, Great Britain’s Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society reported that there were at least two million slaves in Ethiopia; an enormous number given that Ethiopia’s total population was estimated between 8 and 14 million. (15 to 25% of the total population of Ethiopia)

Oct 16, 2023

Asmara: World Foord Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty were simultaneously observed today, 16 October under the theme “Water is Life, Water is Food” and “Dignity in Practice for All” respectively.

At the ceremony conducted at national level in Embaderho in which Ministers, senior Government and PFDJ officials, representatives of UN offices, members of the diplomatic community and invited guests took part, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, noting that agriculture, industry and our daily activities are placing an unprecedented strain on water resources, said that the Government of Eritrea since independence has been launching serious programs on soil and water conservation in general and building different sizes of dams in particular and thus the number of reservoirs has grown by eight times.

Minister Arefaine went on to say that as a result crop production has increased by two times while vegetables and fruits have increased by 6 times and 71 times, respectively.

Minister Arefaine also said that considering the preciousness of water and its scarcity, the world is going through “drop per crop” philosophy in order to utilize water judiciously & Eritrea is following the trend by constantly shifting from furrow irrigation to pressurized irrigation.

Mr. Aeneas Chuma, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, said that some 780 million people around the world are going hungry, almost fifty million children are at risk of death from sever wasting and yet funding for this year’s global humanitarian appeal stands at just 32 percent.

Mr. Aeneas Chuma also, said that Eritrea’s journey in water and resource management and poverty eradication is an inspiring story of progress.

At the event, various representatives of institutions and UN offices addressed the gathering.

- On May 17, 1949, the UNGA voted on the Bevin-Sforza Plan that included the partition of Eritrea. When the UN voted in each proposal, Ethiopia voted in favor of the partition of Eritrea while claiming Eritrea based on historical, cultural and economic reasons.

-Tsehafi Tezaz Aklilu Habtewold, Head of Ethiopian Delegation, in his Memo to the Derg and Ambassador Zewde Reta, in his Book, "Ye Ertra Gudai" Page 173 resented that the Partition Plan of Eritrea failed.

-As the PM of Ethiopia alleged, there is NO mention of Ethiopia's access to the sea in the UN Charter. The following is from the Preamble of UNGA Resolution 390 A, that created the federation between Eritrea and Ethiopia. And, despite its binding effect on Ethiopia, Ethiopia unilaterally dismantled it in 1962.

The rights and claims of Ethiopia based on geographical, historical, ethnic or economic reasons, including in particular Ethiopia's legitimate need for adequate access to the sea,..

-When Egypt claimed Massawa, King Haile Sellasie sent Aklilu Habtewold to Egypt and tried to use the Nile card. The Emperor urged King Farouk of Egypt, that Egypt must support Ethiopia’s position and lobby other Arab countries to support Ethiopia's claims.

-In mid-20 century, Yemenis were the largest non-Italian foreign community in Eritrea. In the 1950s the Ethiopian head of delegation to the UN, Aklilu Habtewold, threatened the Yemeni delegation to the UN that if Yemen was to vote against Ethiopia’s interest, it'd expel 20,000 Yemenis from Ethiopia.
