Centamin’s Sukari solar power plant performing ahead of expectations
Posted by Daniel Gleeson on 13th October 2022
Centamin says the solar plant at its Sukari gold mine, in Egypt, has entered the final stages of commissioning and is delivering savings ahead of expectations.
Furthermore, it says continued progress has been made to assess the opportunity to use Egyptian grid power at Sukari.
The solar plant, which is made up of a 36 MW solar farm and 7.5 MW battery–energy storage system, has been consistently delivering 36 MW DC, converting to 30 MW AC of power, since early September, the company said. This reduction in exposure to volatile fuel pricing with commissioning is saving the company up to 70,000 litres per day of diesel and averaging a reduction in diesel consumption of 22 million litres per year, according to Centamin.
Based on current diesel prices, this means the plant has the potential to provide annual cost savings of $20 million, alongside an expected reduction in Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 60,000 t/y CO2 equivalent and a subsequent reduction in volume of diesel trucked to site.
Full commissioning of the solar plant is expected this quarter, the company added.
Centamin previously awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contracts for the 36 MW solar farm and 7.5 MW battery–energy storage system at Sukari to juwi AG and Giza Systems. juwi was contracted to design, supply and integrate the Sukari solar and battery plant into the current diesel power plant, while Giza Systems was contracted to install the Sukari solar plant. To maximise the total energy generation, the project is using bifacial solar photovoltaic modules and single axis tracking. juwi Hybrid IQ microgrid technology will enable the integration of the solar and battery system into the existing off–grid network and support the operation of the existing power station, according to the company.
On top of the solar plant news, Centamin revealed it is actively engaged with government and independent power providers to further reduce its reliance on diesel at Sukari. Its initial proposals to supply 30–50 MW AC of grid power to Sukari have been received and an internal evaluation is underway for potential integration from 2024, it said.
Fifty megawatts of AC grid power supply creates the potential to fully displace the use of diesel for power generation at Sukari, Centamin said. The minimum 30 MW AC of grid power, combined with the existing 30 MW AC of solar power, creates the potential to operate during daylight hours without using any diesel power generation and substantially offsetting diesel consumption during night time hours, it said.
The Egyptian grid power is generated from natural gas and a mix of renewables, such as hydro, solar and wind, creating the opportunity to further reduce Sukari’s GHG emissions. Further, the Egyptian industrial grid tariffs are significantly cheaper than the cost of power
generation using diesel fuel, Centamin said.
Martin Horgan, CEO of Centamin, said: “Delivery of this critical project is instrumental to our ongoing commitment to reduce our reliance on diesel fuel, minimise greenhouse gas emissions and realising material cost savings. The solar plant and potential to integrate grid power will contribute materially to our environmental stewardship philosophy and our strategic objective of maximising returns for all stakeholders.”

Re: PIA, heads for Egypt
It is good to see them together again, but if I am asked more, then it would have been better if the two had also a courage to visit each other in each other's capitals FIRST before heading to a third party's capital and use that as a big opportunity.
Why did they fail to take that opportunity into their own hands and organise a state visit to each other?
Why?

53 HRC – Eritrea’s Statement on the Urgent debate on public acts of Incitement to Religious Hatred and the Burning of the Holy Koran
https://shabait.com/2023/07/13/53-hrc-e ... oly-koran/
Jul 13, 2023
Mr President,
Eritrea has a rich history of religious tolerance, coexistence and harmony. Indeed, Christianity and Islam have coexisted in mutual respect and tolerance for the last 14 centuries.
The overarching aim in post independence Eritrea is also anchored on nation-building predicated on upholding of equal rights and opportunity, that is enshrined in nation law. There is thus no exclusion, marginalization, preferences on the basis of religion, sex, ethnicity, etc. Eritrea shines as a peaceful, secular nation where religious freedom is guaranteed by law and respected by every citizen.
Eritrea thus rejects extremist ideas and actions, that sow discord through radicalization and religious extremism. This trend disregards the respect of the inherent value system, as well as respect and tolerance of the diverse religious constituencies. Disrespecting the sacred traditions, practices and holy books is thus irresponsible and unacceptable.
Mr President,
In the above context, the recent burning of the Holy Koran by the leader of the Danish hard line Party Rasmus Paludan that continued in many western cities constitutes as irresponsible act that defies peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among religions. It is also a provocative act especially occurring, as it did, during the Eid celebrations.
The position of some western countries in defence of the above intolerable act as “freedom of expression” is thus both untenable and irresponsible, as the act also jeopardizes social harmony and international solidarity. It is also a violation of Article 20 of the ICCPR (International Convention on Civic and Political rights), that obligates all states to prohibit and enforce accountability on acts that constitute religious hatred and incitement to violence.
Mr President,
In line to the rational expounded above, Eritrea supports the draft resolution at hand and calls on HRC members to uphold consensus during decision time as a basis of our future collective effort to the ideals of humanity.
I thank you, Mr President!

Re: PIA, heads for Egypt
Pre. Isaias thanked Egypt for its Initiative; reiterated Eritrea’s support to the people of Sudan to extricate themselves from this quagmire; underlined imperative of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty; stressed pitfalls of military intervention; hoped collective efforts will lead to Gate of Safety.

President Isaias Afwerki had also met, earlier in the day, with the President of the Republic of Chad, General Mahamat Deby to exchange views on the crisis in the Sudan. @hawelti

Re: PIA, heads for Egypt
In my little understanding of the subject area of international relations having a (good) diplomatic relationship with somebody doesn't also mean a dependence on each other. In the abscence of a dependence, the parties should also be in a position to enjoy their own respective relations with any third party, without this affecting their relations with any other party. They remain sovereign, I think.Zmeselo wrote: ↑13 Jul 2023, 08:01Simple answer, in my view, is spelled: Mike Hammer & Co.DefendTheTruth wrote: ↑13 Jul 2023, 06:19It is good to see them together again, but if I am asked more, then it would have been better if the two had also a courage to visit each other in each other's capitals FIRST before heading to a third party's capital and use that as a big opportunity.

If this claim has got any merit, then I don't think that your "simple answer" would suffice to address the absence of a good diplomatic relationship between the two sisterly nations of the region. No other nation on the planet is nearer to the other than the two are to one another, in my little grasping of the subject matter.
The Chineese do entertain their diplomatic relations with both Russia and the USA today, isn't it?
Did they go in line with the idea of "if you are a freind of Mr. X, then you are no more a friend of mine" sort of attitude?
I don't think so.

Eritrea can withstand this
https://www.foley.com/en/insights/publi ... ia-eritreaIn response to the conflict, the United States enacted several measures that remain in place today:
• In May 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced visa restrictions for Ethiopian and Eritrean officials, military personnel, and other individuals
The State Department did not announce the names of restricted individuals. The State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) began implementing a policy of prohibiting the export of defense articles and services to Ethiopia.responsible for, or complicit in, undermining resolution of the crisis in Tigray.
• In August 2021, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), citing human rights abuses in Tigray, designated General Filipos Woldeyohannes, the Eritrean army’s chief of staff, as a target for sanctions under Executive Order 13818. President Donald Trump had issued E.O. 13818 in 2017 as part of the Global Magnitsky Act, authorizing sanctions against individuals responsible for human rights abuses and corruption around the world.
• In September 2021, President Joe Biden issued Executive Order 14046, authorizing sanctions against entities and individuals responsible for
in Ethiopia.widespread violence, atrocities, and serious human rights abuse
OFAC did not yet designate any targets for sanctions under E.O. 14046. These sanctions later were codified in the Ethiopia Sanctions Regulations.
• In November 2021, DDTC formally amended the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), codifying DDTC’s policy of denying licenses for exporting defense articles or services
• Also in November 2021, pursuant to E.O. 14046, OFAC designated four Eritrean entities and two Eritrean individuals as targets for sanctions.to or for the armed forces, police, intelligence, or other internal security forces of either Ethiopia or Eritrea.
The entities were:
° The Eritrean Defense Force;
° The People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ, Eritrea’s sole legal political party);
° The Hidri Trust (a holding company affiliated with PFDJ); and
° The Red Sea Trading Corporation (a business management company affiliated with PFDJ).
• The individuals were:
° Abraha Kassa Nemariam, the head of the Eritrean National Security Office; and
° Hagos Ghebrehiwet W Kidan, the economic advisor to the PFDJ and C.E.O. of the Red Sea Trading Corporation.
• In January 2022, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, citing human rights violations, terminated Ethiopia from the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act trade program, ending the country’s duty-free access to American markets. (Zmeselo's addition: They removed all these hindrances for Ethiopia, only after the country showed interest in joining BRICS)
The program had generated employment for 100,000 Ethiopians and had earned the country $100 million annually.
