Ethiopia, as we know it today, was created and established by Menelik, who in turn depended on the firearms/training/aid he got from various European countries (even Italy gave him many, many firearms, in their quest to counter yohannes).
Without those European firearms and aid, in the form of their generals advising his army, he wouldn't have been able to expand the borders of the empire and establish Ethiopia as we know it today.
