China-Eritrea Ties: Eritrean President begins official visit to China
https://news.cgtn.com/news/2023-05-14/V ... index.html
14-May-2023
The Eritrean president began an official visit to China on Sunday. Yu Li has the details:
Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport, beginning his state visit to China. President Isaias has been visiting China several times and the last time he was here was in 2006 for the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
During his visit, President Isaias will be welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in a ceremony and banquet. The two leaders will engage in talks, with a focus on strategic partnership and exchange views on international and regional issues concerned both sides. Additionally, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will hold a meeting with President Isaias.
This year holds significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Eritrea. In 2022, the two heads of state jointly decided to elevate China-Eritrea ties to a strategic partnership. Furthermore, Eritrea joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2021. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that during the recent evacuation of Chinese nationals from Sudan, the first batch was transported to Eritrea.
According to Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit is expected to inject new energy into the comprehensive and in-depth development of China-Eritrea relations and promote fruitful bilateral cooperation.

It would be safe to say Chinese's tactful approach to politics earning them more influence around the world, particularly in Africa. As my wise friend always says, accidentally walking into a room and seeing a naked woman standing under a shower, and when you turn back to head quickly out of the room while mumbling 'I'm sorry, ma'am', that is politeness. But if you say 'I'm sorry, sir' while heading out, giving the impression that you didn't see enough of the person in the shower even to figure out the gender of the person so you would preserve the dignity of the lady, that is tactfulness.
Having said that, the Chinese rarely invite African leaders individually to have a one-to-one meeting, especially small nations- just like the western powers do. The importance of Eritrea in the region has been indirectly admitted by the western power- uttering Eritrea's name in every opportunity they've got tells us something Eritrea does must be right to bother the powers of the day this much. Now, that acknowledgment has been cemented by the East as well. And of course, Eritrea has earned it.

China sees 54 individual countries in Africa. The US sees Africa as one country that is represented by USAID recipient leaders.
