Finland now officially member of NATO

Finland has officially been named the 31st member of NATO, marking a major shift in the security landscape in northeastern Europe that adds some 1,300 kilometers (830 miles) to the alliance’s frontier with Russia.

“Finland has today become a member of the defence alliance NATO. The era of military non-alignment in our history has come to an end. A new era begins,” the Finnish presidency said in a statement. “Each country maximizes its own security. So does Finland. At the same time, NATO membership strengthens our international position and room for manoeuvre. As a partner, we have long actively participated in NATO activities. In the future, Finland will make a contribution to NATO’s collective deterrence and defence,” it added.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg were on hand at NATO’s Brussels headquarters as Finland's Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto deposited the country's instrument of accession.

Finland’s flag will be raised outside NATO headquarters on Tuesday afternoon in a ceremony attended by NATO foreign ministers, including Blinken. For all future NATO meetings, Finland participates as an Ally — seated at the table between Estonia and France.

Finland’s acceptance into the US-led security alliance presents a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has long sought to undermine NATO, and before invading Ukraine, demanded the bloc refrain from further expansion.

The invasion instead drove non-aligned Finland and Sweden to abandon their neutrality and seek protection within NATO, though Sweden’s attempt to join the bloc has been stalled by alliance members Turkey and Hungary.

A conference on HIV/AIDS and men who have sex with men has been successfully held in Ethiopia as a satellite event of the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) despite outroar from religious groups and hómosexuality remaining a serious offence in the North African nation.

The event, “Claim, Scale-up and Sustain”, was organised by African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR) and was to be held at Addis Ababa’s Jupiter Hotel but was forced to move to the UN Conference Centre after being widely reported in the Ethiopian press.

Leaders from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Catholic Church, Islam and Protestant churches were to hold a press conference condemning the conference on November 29 but were apparently dissuaded from doing so after meeting with Health Minister Tewodros Adhanom.

Conference organisers expected around 200 people from 25 countries to attend, with keynpte speakers including UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe and US Global AIDS coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby.

Dr. Seyoum Antonios, Executive Director of United for Life Ethiopia – a local NGO – had said a tough stance is timely as some visitors come and engage in sex tourism and the prostitution business is also gaining momentum. According to him, the practice is a new phenomenon brought about with the increased exposure to globalizing trends, adding that orphans are especially at risk as they do not have proper family protection.

The religious leaders deemed hómosexuality part of "cultural colonization" and a sign the new generation is "loosening". They cited preaching in religious institutions, schools, societal institutions and societal out-casting as key to ensuring the practice does not become widespread.

ኣያይዘንም ለምድረ ቦዘኔዎች መግለጥ የምንፈልገው ሓቅ፡ ወፈፌውንና ወራሪውን ቡቲን እንደምናወግዝ ሁሉ፤ ከስነምግባር ውጭ የሆኑ ኣካሄዶችን በሙሉ እንኮንናለን። ሃገረ ኤርትራችን ዬምንኮራባት ከጥንት ከጥዋቱ የቆዩ ስነምግባሮቿን ስለምታከብርና ስለምታስከብር ነው። ይህንን ጉልህ እርምጃዋን፡ በርካቶቹ በስነምግባር ተኮትኩተው ያደጉ ታጋዮቿ እንዲታቀብ በማድረጋቸው ኩራት ሲሰማን፤ በመካከላቸው ኣንዳንድ ልዑላዊ ሃገርን ሳይቀር የሚደፍሩ የቡቲን ዓይነት ወፈፌ ወራሪ መሪዎችን የሚደግፉ በማዬታችን ግን ኣዝነናል። ምክንያቱም የኤርትራውያን ሰማእታት ኣደራ እንዲያ ኣልነበረምና ነው። [አራት ሚልየን ነጥቦች]

እኛ ኤርትራውያን የመሃልና የመስመር ዳኞች፡ በኢትዮጵያውያን መካከል በሰላሙ ዘመን ቁርሾና እሳት ለመለኮስ የሚደረግ ኣካሄድን ቅዱስ ተግባር ባለመሆኑ በኤርትራዊ ጭዋነት ኩራትና ትህትና ጭምር እናወግዛለን። “በነገር ስራ” ሁከት ለመፍጠር የሚንጨረጨሩ ኣካላትንም ኣደብ ይገዙ ዘንድ እንዠልጣቸዋለን። ከነርሱም ውስጥ ኣንዷን እንዲህ ዠልጠናታል
