I guess, Eritreans are stupid. We don't know the difference between the long defunct Soviet Union & the Russia of today.

Psst...besides, we've no idea who John Foster Dulles & all the other little devils that came after him are too.

Ethiopia buys 200 T-72 tanks from Ukraine

Guy Martin

https://www.defenceweb.co.za/land/land- ... m-ukraine/

10th Jun 2011

Ethiopia has ordered more than 200 T-72 tanks worth over US$100 million from Ukraine in one of the largest contracts signed by the Ukrainian arms exporter in more than 15 years.

Ukrspecexport SC, the state controlled arms export, signed the contract with the Defence Ministry of Ethiopia yesterday, reports the Ukrinform news agency.

Interfax and Ukrainian sources suggest the Ethiopian order will most likely be made up of upgraded T-72s.

The T-72 was first produced in the Soviet Union in the 1970s but the tanks that will be supplied to Ethiopia will be modernised with a new engine, guided weapons and reactive armour.

Ukrspecexport will also receive maintenance and repair contracts for the upkeep of Ethiopia’s T-72s.

Ethiopia already operate the T-72, 60 of which were purchased from Yemen in 2003, according to Jane’s Sentinel Security Assessment.

Ethiopia is concerned with improving its military in order to secure its borders in the restive horn of Africa region. Over the last decade the country has engaged in several skirmishes and conflicts with neighbouring countries.

Ethiopia has not enjoyed good relations with its neighbour Eritrea (which used to be part of Ethiopia) and accuses its neighbour of sponsoring violence in the country. Skirmishes along the Eritrea-Ethiopia border are commonplace. Between 1998 and 2000 Ethiopia fought a costly border war with Eritrea that did not significantly alter the border line. During the conflict, Ethiopia increased its stocks of T-55 tanks and artillery pieces, including BM-21 122m multiple rocket launchers and 122 mm D-30 towed howitzers, according to Jane’s Sentinel Security Assessment. The conflict also revealed shortcomings in Ethiopia’s military, particularly regarding logistics.

In 2006 Ethiopian troops, backed by the United States, invaded Somalia to prop up the Transitional Federal Government there, which was under threat by the Islamic Courts Union Islamist umbrella group. Ethiopian troops withdrew in January 2009.

Ethiopia has also been involved in conflict in Ogaden. Between 2007 and 2008 the Ethiopian Army launched an offensive against the rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front, prompted by the killing of 74 people in an attack on an oil exploration field.

Ethiopia is also involved in peacekeeping operations and has deployed troops to places like Darfur.

The T-72, a development of the earlier T-64 main battle tank, entered production in 1972 in the Soviet Union. It was the Soviet Army’s most numerous tank until the collapse of the Soviet Union, but was also exported in large numbers to Warsaw Pact countries, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. It was built with and without license in several countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia. More than 40 countries have operated an estimated 50 000 T-72s.

The T-72B entered production in 1985 and in export form is known as the T-72S. It has a new engine and suspension system and is configured for mounting explosive reactive armour (ERA). It is armed with a 125mm smoothbore gun, a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun and a 12.7mm air defence machine gun mounted on the commander’s cupola

The T-72 can also carry guided weapons in the form of the 9K120 Svir (Nato codename AT-11 Sniper). It is intended to engage tanks fitted with ERA as well as low-flying targets. It has a range of 100-4 000 metres and firing requires the tank to be stationary. Both shells and missiles can be fired from the main gun.

The hull and turret are protected by armour plating, including combined armour arrays over the frontal arc. Since 1988, ERA has been fitted.

Various upgrades offer more powerful engines, new guns, updated sighting systems and countermeasures.

Just one episode of Ethiopia, with your precious US & its support.

On Feb. 11, 1967 the Ethiopian Imperial Army massacred, burnt, & bayoneted the inhabitants of Adi Ibrahim & surrounding villages. On Feb 12- 1967, 21 detainees, most of them teachers and government employees, were summarily executed in Tessenei prison.

Between Feb & April 1967 the Ethiopian Army burned 62 villages, incl. Mogoraib, Zamla, Ad Ibrahim, Gerset Gurgur, Adi Bara, Asir, Fori & Ad Habab. The Army used artillery & aerial bombardment (using incendiaries). 402 civilians were killed & about 60,000 cattle & camels slaughtered.

Yes, Churchill was a racist. It’s time to break free of his ‘great white men’ view of history

Opinion by Richard Toye

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/10/opin ... index.html

Black Lives Matter movement presses UK to confront colonial past

Editor’s Note: Richard Toye is a professor of history at the University of Exeter. He is the co-author, with Steven Fielding and Bill Schwarz, of The Churchill Myths, https://global.oup.com/academic/product ... gb&lang=en& which will be published by Oxford University Press in August. His other books include Churchill’s Empire and Winston Churchill: A Life in the News. The opinions expressed here are his own. Read more opinion articles https://www.cnn.com/opinions at CNN.

CNN — Last weekend, during a Black Lives Matter protest in London, a piece of graffiti was added to the base of the statue of Winston Churchill that stands in Parliament Square.
Churchill was a racist,
https://www.cnn.com/style/article/uk-st ... -intl-gbr/ the slogan declared.

The activist who wrote this – or sprayed it – was factually correct. However, there is much more that can be said, of course, to explain and contextualize the former British prime minister’s views.

Richard Toye

Presenting an informed historical understanding of those opinions should not be misread as an attempt to justify them. Nor should mentioning the other parts of Churchill’s record, notably his resistance to the Nazis and leadership during World War II, be seen as an attempt to argue that his racism pales into insignificance beside it.

But unless we make an effort to understand the origins and particularities of his white supremacism, we shall fail to understand the structure of racialized thinking as it still exists today.

Churchill is often the subject of false or exaggerated allegations. But in truth, he said enough horrifying things that there is no need to invent more. He said that he hated https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/bec ... -victorian people with
slit eyes and pig tails.
To him, people from India https://books.google.com/books?id=HQguD ... le&f=false were
the beastliest people in the world next to the Germans.
He admitted https://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/book ... mpire.html that he
did not really think that black people were as capable or as efficient as white people.
In 1943, US Vice President Henry Wallace challenged his notion of Anglo-Saxon superiority. Churchill, who drank “quite a bit of whiskey” (as Wallace wrote), gave a blunt reply. According to Wallace’s diary: https://books.google.com/books?id=rgp2C ... ll&f=false
He said why be apologetic about Anglo-Saxon superiority, that we were superior, that we had the common heritage which had been worked out over the centuries in England and had been perfected by our constitution.
It is not enough to say that all this is explained by Churchill’s background. Of course, as he himself emphasized, https://www.britannica.com/event/Victorian-era he was a child of the Victorian age – an era when Britons tended to take their own national and moral superiority for granted. Yet other people of similar vintage, including fellow Conservative imperialists, felt that his views were old-fashioned or even downright shocking. Lord Archibald Wavell, the last-Viceroy-of-India-but-one, observed https://www.nytimes.com/1943/06/19/arch ... s-his.html that Churchill
has still at heart his cavalry subaltern’s idea of India; just as his military tactics are inclined to date from the Boer War.
We need to recognize, though, that Churchill’s worldview was far from static, and his ideas did not simply freeze in time when the 20th Century dawned. He started his parliamentary career as a Conservative but in 1904 crossed the floor of the House of Commons and spent the next two decades as a Liberal. His first taste of office was as a junior minister at the Colonial Office and at first he was seen by some as a (left-wing) radical, https://winstonchurchill.org/the-life-o ... al-decade/ as a Little Englander, https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dic ... -englander and as a threat to the Empire. Ramsay MacDonald, later Britain’s first Labour Party Prime Minister, criticized https://books.google.com/books?id=Ca4DN ... 9D&f=false Churchill’s modest efforts to rein in local colonial governments’ mistreatment of their non-white populations.
I do not think I am an over-cautious man,
wrote MacDonald.

Nor did he consider himself short of sympathy for
oppressed black and yellow men
in South Africa.
But I am bound to say that, unless the Cabinet muzzle Mr. Winston Churchill, they will bring themselves into a disastrous conflict with the Colonies.
Churchill quickly changed tack, which suggests that, although many of his beliefs were deeply held, there was an opportunistic element in the way that he deployed them. In the 1930s, having rejoined the Conservative Party, he chose to ally himself with diehard imperialists against reform in India in part because he believed that it would help further his career. This is why I argue, in my book Churchill’s Empire, https://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/book ... ari-t.html that it was during the years between the two world wars that Churchill
decided to become a Victorian.
In other words, his expressions of imperialism and racism were partly self-conscious attempts at image making. It seems natural to condemn this, but we should be cautious, when trying to understand societal racism, about putting too much weight on prominent individuals, however famous or notorious.

I bet until 1974, at least 30%, of those 65,000 got martyred by US & Israeli etc (your gods) made weapons. Besides, the Soviet Union is long dead but your masters are still alive & kicking & creating mayhem all over the world.

Foster Dulles & all little devils that came after him, that's what I said. Maybe you love Susan 'mice' Rice, like Meles chenawi did.
