In diplomatic terms what it means is that Kenya with a quarter of Ethiopian population is chosen over Ethiopia to be the centre of HOA politics. Despite doing all the things they asked him to do, the Americans just didn’t think Abiye is a capable and reliable ally.

You're presuming that Abyi wants that roll, to begin with. Being chosen as the US's "Anchor State" demands a lot of shedding blood, sommarsaults & yuh suh Massa's.
