When you don’t know what you are doing and mess up the economy trust me sooner or later you will be exposed. In today’s Ethiopia much of the population is experiencing hunger and starvation.

Money printing, self serving laws and cheap propaganda won’t cover it.

In situations like this you may be tempted to bring in foreigners to fix it for you. But that too won’t work as they will demand money, restructuring and political fairness.
Too much borrowing is not an option as you have already borrowed to the tune of 25$b under 5 years.

These are just gimmicks, unfortunately. The items included in the ban do not consume much of the country's hard currencies (since the ban is on legal imports), except probably vehicles which are mostly imported by the Public sector. At this point, our people are more than willing to give up the consumption of these items. In economics, a luxury good is a good for which demand increases more than proportionally as income rises. Does the realty of our country reflect the rising of income for the majority?

On another note, the illegal import of these commodities will be multiplied if there is any market that could afford the relatively exorbitant pricing that will follow the ban. clunkers will enjoy a heyday as they also worth millions more than their actual price. Banning usually leads to unintended results the effect of which could mostly be contrary to intentions.

The real problem is shortage of forex as most of it is directed to finance the raging war and, what is left off is mishandled at the hands of corrupt bankers, politicians and, their vulture buddy traders. We do not export enough to generate forex that can meet the growing demands of the economy as well. The parallel market mushroomed and thriving not because people are chewing more gums but the country hasn't been able to provide legally enough forex for the import sector that does show astronomical growth following consumer demands. When you print money more than what should be in circulation, the excess has to find a way to leak out and be useful somewhere. That somewhere is called the black market

ይህ የሬሚታንስ ኢኮኖሚ አሁን ላይ ከ6 ቢሊዮን ዶላር ባመት በላይ ነው ይባላል። ልብ በሉ ዲያስፖራው በእቃና ቁሳቁስ መልክ የሚያስገባው መድሃኒት፣ ልብስ፣ ኮስሜኢክስ፣ ቾምፑተር ምናምን ሳይጨምር ለቤት ለዘመድ ምኖሪያ የሚልከውና ቤት ለማሰራት፣ ቢዝነስ ለመጀር የሚያስገባውን ደማምረን ነው ።

የዚህ ነጻ ዌልፌር ሬሚታንስ ፍሰት የገባው ንጋዴና ገበሬ የሁሉም ነገር ዋጋ ካገሪቱ ሕዝብ ፐር ካፒታ ሺ ግዜ እጥፍ ሰቅሎታል። ለዚህ ነው አለምንም የደሞዝና ግቢ እድገት የምግብና እቃዎች ዋጋ ዝም ብሎ የሚያድገው ። ይህን የሬሚታንስ ዶላር ፈሰስ የሚቋምጠው ካድሬና ቢሮ ከበርቴ ከገበሬ ጋር በመሻረክ አይደለም በሬ፣ በግ፣ ፍየልና ዶሮ ፤ አይደለም ቴፍ፣ ስንዴና ገብስ ፣ ቲማቲም ቃሪያ፣ ሽንኩርት ጎመን ሁሉ ሰማይ ጠቀስ ዋጋ ይጠይቃሉ ። ለምን ከተባለ ከተሜ ረብጣ ዶላር ከየዲያስፖርው ስለሚላክለት አሁን ሃብት እየተዘዋወረ ያለው ከከተማ ወደ ገጠር ነው ።

አንድ በሬ ለማስባት ስንት ስለወሰደ ነው በ200 ሺ ብር ማለት በሩብ ሚሊዮን ብር የሚሸጠው? ይህ እብደት አይደለም፣ ስህተት አይደለም፣ አይን ያወጣ መንግስት የሚደግፈው ዝርፊያ ነው ። ያው ከተሜ የፖለቲካ ንቃቱን ከፍ ያለ ለፒፒ ፓርቲም የሶሻል መሰረቱ ሳላልሆነ ልክ እንደ ወያኔ ዘመን አሁን እየተቀጣ ነው።

ስለዚህ ከላይ ያነሳችሁት ማክሮ ፊስካልና ሞኒትርይ ችግሮች እንዳሉ ሆነው ይህ በሬሚታንስ እስትንፋስ የሚነቃነቀው ኮንሲዩመር ሴክተር አጭር መፍሄ አይኖረውም ። እንኳንስ ሰው ሬሚታንስ መላክ ሊቆም ህጋዊ በሆነ በባንክ አማካይነት እንኳ መላክ አይፈልግም። አሁን የምንዛሪው ልዩነት በእጥፍ ስለሚለያይ ማለት ነው። ችግሩ ፌክ ኢኮኖሚ ስለሆነ ነው ። የእቃ ዋጋ ያን እቃ ለማምረት ከሚፈጀው ወጪ ጋር ግንኙነት የለውም ። የሰዉ የመግዛት አቅም ከዚያ ገዥ ገቢ ጋር ግንኙነት የለውም። ስለዚህ የነ አደም እስሚዝ ፍላጎትና አቅርቦት በኢትዮጵያ የለም አይሰራም!!

Not only politicians but also everyone has now become a thief. While accusing the government of corruption, the diaspora avoids the national bank when sending remittances, which itself is a corruption. When a driver bribes a policeman to avoid prosecution, he or she commits a petty crime. A farmer or retailer that inflates the price of goods is participating in a financial crime, which in turn results in frequent thefts and murder. A tenant that subdivides & sublets a Kebele house at exorbitant price is committing a criminal offense. When a private or public institution treasurer submits fake or forged proformas and invoices, the theft isn’t any different from that of politicians. A parent that bribes a teacher to be easy on his child is part of the problem. The greedy medical doctors that prescribe medication with no or without adequate diagnosis & result in a disability or death of their patients are criminals. All these things are happening in Ethiopia as we speak and if you are one of the diasporas that sends remittances illegally as noted above, you better shut the fvck up.

This is just a psychological work by the government. Only 1% of the population consumes luxurious goods in Ethiopia. They are mostly elites with special relationships with the government and members of government officials. The population will be happy by such declaration which may not be enforced at all. That is where the psychological game ends.

Briefly, a foreign currency reserve can’t be augmented by banning the imports of luxurious goods.
Exports and securing intl loans are the two main sources of foreign currency reserves. Yes, heavily taxing imports of luxurious goods is another way of securing currency reserves but for a country like Ethiopia it is insignificant.

You can run but can’t hide.

The cause of the collapse of the Ethiopian economy is very simple. It is loss of productivity. There is nothing being produced in the country. Agriculture products' supply is way below demand. Manufacturing is ceased for the last 5 years. Even those export oriented manufacturing entities have ceased to exist due to the consequences of the ongoing civil war.

The shortage of foreign currency is exacerbated by the government childish policy and corruption. If the banks don't have any dollar to sell, then don't force people to sell their hard earned foreign currency to the banks at the official exchange rate. Liberalizing the exchange market will eventually slow down the spiralling downfall of the Birr.

Now as for inflation, the main cause is the government itself. It is printing and spending money as if there is no tomorrow. Instead of allocating meager resource on essential things, the Mamo Killo principle is to hire italians and foreigners to build his palaces or science museum or flower gardens that have zero benefits to the economy or the population other than exacerbating the inflation. Inflation can only be controlled by stopping spending, nothing else.

The wutaf nekais who claim that remittances are the cause of inflation or done in the black market is theft, they are wrong. Wutaf nekais need a lot of education, unfortunately it takes a lot to get through the thick narrow minded and tribalist skull.

___ጥሩ ጉዳይ ጠቅሰኻል - የዲያስፓራ ገንዘብ በተመለከተ። ቀደም ብሎ ወያኔዎች ይህን የዲያስፓራ የኢኮኖሚ ሚና በመደባበቅ የህዝቡን የኑሮ ደረጃ እንዳሻሻሉት ሲደሰኩሩበት የነበረ ጉዳይ ነው - ያነሳኸው ። እውነቱ ግን በርካታ የከተማ ደሳሳ የቀበሌ ቤቶች ሳይቀሩ የብረት በር፤ሶፋ፤ቴሊቭዥን፤የቁጠባ ሂሳብ ደብተር፤ ጸዐዳ ልብስ ወዘተ ያመጡት ዐረብ አገር ከሰው ቤት ተቀጥረው በሚሰሩት ኢትዮጵያዊያን እንጅ በወያኔ አልነበረም - በአውሮፓ እና በአሜሪካ የሚኖረውን በሚልዮን የሚቆጠር ኢትዮጵያዊ ሳልጠቅስ።በእርግጥም የኢትዮጵያ ኢኮኖሚ የሬሚታንስ ኢኮኖሚ ነው። ምናልባት ከቡና እና ቆዳ እና ሌጦ ቢበልጥ እንጅ የሚተናነስ አይደለም። ሬሚታንስ በነጻ የሚገኝ ገቢ ነው ቡና ቆዳ እና ሌጦ ግን ከገቢ ላይ ወጭ ተቀንሶ የሚሰሉ ናቸው። We remember when the diaspora boycotted TPLF on buying or sending remittances, how much it was felt.ከእነኝህ የገቢ ምንጮች ብቻ ሳይሆን ከውጭ በዕርዳታ ለአገሪቱ የሚሰጥ ገንዘብ ሳይቀር ወደ ባለስልጣናት ኪስ ገቢ ይሆናል። ኢኮኖሚው እና ፓለቲካው በስርዐት እና በግልጽነት ቢመራ ኑሮ እንደ ኢትዮጵያ ትልቅ ህዝብ ያለው አገር የት እና የት በደረሰ ነበር። አሁን የዚህ ሁሉ የወረቀት ብር ጋጋታ ማንን ይጎዳል ተገዶ ማዳበሪያ እንድገዛ የተፈረደበት ገበሬ። የማዳበሪያ ሱስ የያዘው የእርሻ ማሳውን ለማልማት ሳይወድ በግድ የቤት እንሰሳውን እና ያገኛትን ምርት ለወረቀት ብር ጥሎ ይሄዳል። አንድ ገበሬ 4 ወር ወይም አመታት የለፋበትን ምርት በነጻ ሰጥቶ ይመለሳል።

___አሁን ያለው ኢኮኖሚ ልክ እንደ ክልል እና ህገ-መንግስቱ የወያኔ legacy/ ትውፊት/ነው። ምንም መሰረታዊ የባህርይ ልዩነት የለውም ሰዎቹም ኢኮኖሚክ ስርዐቱም። It is much like doing the same thing again and again.

The cause of the collapse of the Ethiopian economy is very simple. It is loss of productivity. There is nothing being produced in the country. Agriculture products' supply is way below demand. Manufacturing is ceased for the last 5 years. Even those export oriented manufacturing entities have ceased to exist due to the consequences of the ongoing civil war.

The shortage of foreign currency is exacerbated by the government childish policy and corruption. If the banks don't have any dollar to sell, then don't force people to sell their hard earned foreign currency to the banks at the official exchange rate. Liberalizing the exchange market will eventually slow down the spiralling downfall of the Birr.

Now as for inflation, the main cause is the government itself. It is printing and spending money as if there is no tomorrow.
